A9: Encyclopedia - Wick Highland

Wick is an estuary town in Caithness, in the Highland area of Scotland, on the main highway (the A99-A9 road) linking John O Groats with southern Britain. The town is a royal burgh and the traditional county town of Caithness. The population of the town is about 9000 people. The burgh boundaries have included Pulteneytown since 1902. Pulteneytown was developed on the south side of Wick River by the British Fisheries Society during the 19th century herring boom. Wick now straddles the river and extends along both sides of Wick Bay. W ...

A9: Encyclopedia - Caithness

Caithness (Gallaibh in Gaelic)[1] is a traditional county of Scotland. The county had its own county council from 1890 to 1975, and the name is used also for a district of the Highland region (1975 to 1996), a committee area of the Highland unitary authority (1996 to present), a registration county, a lieutenancy area, the earldom of Caithness and the Caithness constituency of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (1708 to 1918). The boundaries of ...

A9: Encyclopedia II - Wick Highland - Pulteneytown

Pulteneytown is now an area of Wick in on the south side of Wick River. Until 1902 Pulteneytown was administered quite separately from the Royal Burgh of Wick. Pulteneytown takes its name from Sir William Johnstone Pulteney, a governor of the British Fisheries Society. In the early years of the 19th century Sir William commissioned Britain's leading civil engineer, Thomas Telford, to design and supervise the creation of a major new herring fishing town and harbour at the estuary of Wick River. Pulteneytown was so named after th ...

A9: Encyclopedia II - Caithness - Geography

Caithness extends about 40 miles (64 kilometres) north-south and about 30 miles (50 km) east-west. The general aspect of Caithness, which measures in area about 712 square miles (1844 km²), is flat; and this peculiarity is rendered still more striking by the almost total absence of forest. Most of Caithness is old red sandstone to an estimated depth of over 4,000 metres. This consists of the cemented sediments of Lake Orcadie, which is believed to have stretched from Shetland to Grampian during the Devonian period, about 370 million ...

A9: Encyclopedia II - Cruiser Mk II - History and specifications

The A10 was developed by Sir John Carden in 1934 by adaption of the A9 design. The two sub-turrets present on the A9 were removed, and extra armour bolted onto that already present on the front and sides of the hull, along with all faces of the turret, providing approximately twice the armor in most areas. There was no separation between the driver's compartment and the fighting compartments. The turret armament consisted of a QF 2-pounder (40 mm) gun and a coaxial Vickers machine gun. There was a BESA machine gun mounted in the hull ...

A9: Encyclopedia II - Thurso - Sport

The football (soccer) team, Thurso FC (nicknamed "the Vikings"), plays in the North Caledonian League. Another football team in Thurso is the Pathetic Sharks. As their name indicates, they are not exactly Premier League quality. Surfing, for a few years, was a big pastime with many of the local youths. The power of the waves rolling in from the North Atlantic has been compared with those of Hawaii. Certainly, for those with a penchant for barrelling reef-breaks, Thurso East leaves little to be desired on a good day. On a big day, twenty ...

A9: Encyclopedia II - M9 motorway - Route

The road is approximately 30 miles long, and runs in a roughly north-west direction from the M8. It meets the A8 at Newbridge - a traffic blackspot before the junction was grade separated. Its next junction is a motorway spur towards the Forth Road Bridge - however it is only half finished, dumping its traffic onto the badly overloaded A8000 road two miles short of the bridge. The spur is being extended to the A90 dual carriageway as it approaches the bridge so as to releave congestion. The proj ...

A9: Encyclopedia II - Far North Line - Route

Like the A9 road north of Inverness the Far North Line follows generally the line of the east-facing Moray-Firth coast. Much of the population of the far north of Scotland is concentrated in coastal areas and, in places, the railway is almost on the shore, raised above the beach by embankments. The railway links many of the same places as the road. Many more places were served by both the railway and the road before three new road bridges were built: across the Moray Firth (between Inverness and the Black Isle), the Cromarty Firth and the Dornoch Firth. The railway is now, in many places, a l ...

A9: Encyclopedia II - Great Britain road numbering scheme - Two-digit A roads

These radials are supplemented by two-digit codes which are routes that are slightly less important (but may still be classified as trunk routes). These routes are not all centred on London, but as far as possible follow the general principle that their number locates them radially clockwise from the associated single digit route. For example, the A10 (London to King's Lynn) is the first main route clockwise from the A1, the A11 is the next, and so on: A10 London to King's Lynn A11 London to Norwich A12 London ...

A9: Encyclopedia II - Tank classification - Tank types

There were many names given to different tank types, and similar names do not assure the same design goals. Some light tanks were relatively slow, and some were fast. Some heavy tanks had large-calibre low-velocity guns for engaging infantry and bunkers, and some had high-velocity antitank guns. Tank classification - WWI tank types. In WWI the first tank, the Mark I, was designed for supporting infantry by crossing trenches and attacking machine gun posts. Initially, there were two types with two roles. Th ...

A9: Encyclopedia II - Caithness - Caithness constituency

The Caithness constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom represented essentially the county from 1708 to 1918. At the same time however the county town of Wick was represented as a component of the Northern Burghs constituency. Between 1708 and 1832 Caithness was one of the Buteshire and Caithness alternating constituencies: one constituency elected a Member of Parliament (MP) to one parliament and then the other elected an MP to the next. A9: Encyclopedia II - Caithness - Natural heritage

The underlying geology, harsh climate and long history of human occupation have shaped this rich and distinctive natural heritage. Today we see a diverse landscape incorporating both common and rare habitats and species, and Caithness provides a stronghold for many once common breeding species that have undergone serious declines elsewhere, such as waders, water voles and flocks of over-wintering birds. Many rare mammals, birds and fish have been sighted or caught in and around Caithness waters. Harbour porpoises, dolphins (including ...

The Caithness committee area elects 10 members to the 80-member Highland Council. The majority of councillors do not belong to any party, and sit as independents. The area does not include the village of Reay, which is within the Sutherland area. Most of the parish of Reay, however, is within the Caithness area. ...

A9: Encyclopedia II - Far North Line - History

The line was built during the 1860s and 1870s. Much of the work was done by the Inverness-based Highland Railway company or, when completed, taken over by that company. In 1924 the Highland Railway was grouped into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, under the Railways Act of 1921. Like railway lines generally in Britain the line was not a product of any strategic plan, but was an ad hoc development, facilitated by Private Acts of Parliament (which were themselves a significant expense for developers) and dependent on cooperatio ...
