Paulding County is Ohio's only county that was completely within the Black Swamp. The land is the most level of any county in the state; a map of the county looks like a checkerboard, with roads every mile. You can stand on the railroad depot in Antwerp and see the conductor in Defiance, 17 miles away, swinging his lantern as a signal for the engineer to leave the station.
