Omagh - History

1464: Foundation of Franciscan Friary above the Abbey Bridge. Abandoned 1603. 1498: Burning of O'Neill Castle (Near Dublin Road/Market Street intersection) by Garret Mor, Earl of Kildare. 1567: Second Burning of O'Neill Castle, again by Garret Mor. 1610: Foundation of Omagh as a town. 1641: Refuge for Fugitives from East Tyrone, during Rebellion of 1641. 1673: Presbyterian Meeting House established on the Dublin Road. 1689: James II arrives at Omagh, en route to Derry/Londonderry. Omagh abandoned and all materials of use to James's army removed by townspeople. Supporters of William III, Prince of Orange, burn the town. 1743: Second Fire of Omagh – accidental. 1752: Trinity Church (John Street) built. 1768: Omagh replaces Dungannon as County Town of Tyrone. 1777: St Columba's Parish Church built. 1790: Last man Hanged on Gallows Hill. 1804: Omagh Gaol opened on site of former Friary. 1812-1822: Building of Omagh Courthouse (First Stage). 1852: Railways reach Omagh (a) Dungannon line (b) Derry line. 1857: Building of Methodist Church. 1861: Railway lines merge to become Great Northern Railway. 1881: Military Barracks built. 1885: Bell's Bridge, (Bridge Street) built. 1899: Opening of Tyrone County Hospital. 1899: First Local Council elected. 1901: Sacred Heart Church completed. 1904: Boer War Monument erected, originally in front of Courthouse. 1915: Town Hall Auditorium built. Closed in 1997. 1940: Lisanelly Camp built. 1965: Railway Link Closed. 1998: Bomb atrocity on Market Street (Town Centre). 2003: Town Hall and College demolished to commence building of new Civic Arts Centre and Omagh College of Further Education. 2005: Enivironmental improvement scheme in town centre. 2005: New College building opened. 2005: (15 October) Mass protest outside Tyrone County Hospital facing closure. 2005: (28 November) Mass protest on High Street (Town Centre area) as part of the Tyrone County Hospital campaign. Over 30,000 in attendance - all town shops and schools closed for event. 2005: (19 December) Shaun Woodward (Northern Ireland Health Minister) announces that Tyrone County Hospital is to lose its A&E services and be downgraded, causng much anger and controversy. 2006: (March (Projected)) Omagh Throughpass officially completed. 2007: (Projected) St. Lucia's Army Base closure. 2007: (Projected) Omagh Civic Arts Centre officially completed/opened.
