Stephen Ambrose, noted historian
Richard Bellman, noted mathematician and inventor of dynamic programming
Richard Theodore Ely (1854-1943), professor, social activist, economist; came to Wisconsin in 1892 and recruited John R. Commons, E.A. Ross and others who played key roles in fostering the Wisconsin Idea and the progressive agenda, 1892-1925; when in 1894 he was attacked for his interest in socialism, the university regents issued their famous "sifting and winnowing" statement in defending him.
John R. Commons (1862-1945), economist and labor historian; came to Wisconsin in 1904 and worked closely with Robert LaFollette on civil service and utilities' regulation laws; served on a wide range of state and national public policy boards dealing with employment and economic issues.
