Glen Jacobs - Kane
In October 1997 Jacobs was repackaged as Kane, the on-screen half-brother of The Undertaker, with whom he feuded off and on for several years. The characters' histories are that as children, Undertaker "accidentally" burned down the funeral home in Death Valley where they lived, killing their parents, and hideously scarring Kane physically and mentally. Kane is portrayed to be psychologically unstable, supposedly being depressed, schizophrenic, extremely violent and quick to anger. Undertaker's manager, Paul Bearer (who was billed as Kane's father), hid Kane as he grew up and Kane was thought to be dead until he returned as a 7-foot, 326-pounds, one-eyed monster heel at Bad Blood in October 1997 and attacked Undertaker during his Hell in a Cell match with Shawn Michaels. His first actual match as Kane was against Ahmed Johnson on the November 3, 1997 episode of Monday Night RAW. He would later have many other heel and face turns through out the years.
The Undertaker initially refused to fight Kane, saying he would not fight his own flesh and blood for show. However, after Kane interfered in Undertaker's WWF World Heavyweight Championship match at the 1998 Royal Rumble which climaxed in Kane locking Undertaker in a casket and setting it ablaze, Undertaker returned to just defeat Kane at WrestleMania XIV in March 1998 with three tombstone piledrivers. After the match, Kane tombstoned Undertaker into a steel chair.
He won the WWF Championship at the June 1998 King of the Ring pay-per-view from Stone Cold Steve Austin in a First Blood Match, which is the highlight of his career so far. However, the title reign was short lived, as Austin recaptured the title the next night on RAW. Kane went on to win the WWF Tag Team Championship with Mick Foley in July 1998 and with X-Pac in 1999. Kane would later join the Corporation. Later Kane would turn face by getting betrayed by Chyna and getting kicked out of the Corporation. His first alliance with the Undertaker turned him heel again. After having problems with Undertaker, he ended up becoming close friends with X-Pac and turning face against Undertaker. During the Degeneration X reunion X-Pac betrayed Kane. Kane had a feud with X-Pac over his girlfriend Tori, who X-Pac stole from Kane. Kane has also feuded with several of the top superstars including Triple H, The Big Show, Kurt Angle and even WWF owner Vince McMahon. In the process, Kane became one of the premier stars in the WWF. His costume changed over the course of his career, gradually uncovering his body, and even his face. Kane also evolved from speaking with a voice box to speaking without a voice box as X-Pac's tag team partner.
Kane later turned heel for the third time by betraying The Undertaker, giving him two Chokeslams in the Undertaker's match against Chris Benoit. Kane refused to explain his assault. At SummerSlam, Undertaker took off Kane's mask but Kane managed to hide his face. At Unforgiven, Kane cost Undertaker the WWF Championship. In 2001 Kane turned face again by reuniting with Undertaker as the "Brothers of Destruction" and contended for the WWF Tag-Team Championship. The two turned out to be a successful duo, defeating Rikishi and Haku in a brutal First Blood Match. They would then get a shot at the Tag titles at No Way Out, facing then champions the Dudley Boyz and Edge and Christian in a Tables Match. The Brothers of Destruction dominated the entire match and nearly had the match won until Rikishi and Haku interfered. At one point in early 2002, Kane saved The Rock and Hulk Hogan from the n.W.o(Scott Hall, X-Pac, and Kevin Nash) but The Rock and Hulk Hogan was disqualified. Kane, The Rock, and Hulk Hogan would go on to defeat the n.W.o next week on a edition of SMACKDOWN!
Glen Jacobs - Katie Vick
During 2002, Kane entered a feud with HHH and the two had a match at No Mercy 2002 in which the Intercontinental Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship were at stake. Triple H claimed that several years earlier, Kane had an unrequited relationship with someone named Katie Vick. After Vick was killed in a car crash, Kane – who was the driver – allegedly raped her corpse. Triple H later made good on a threat to show video footage of Kane completing his "crimes"; however, the footage clearly showed Triple H (dressed as Kane) simulating necrophilia with a mannequin. Fans were not shy about expressing their disgust with the storyline (which is considered by many as one of the worst WWE storylines ever), forcing WWE writers to bring the story to a quick end. Also, as far as Kane's fans are concerned, this back-story never happened, as it clearly contradicts his previously established history.
Glen Jacobs - Unmasked
In 2003, Triple H gave Kane a chance to join Triple H's faction, Evolution, so they could be the best faction in the history of the WWE. But Co-General manager Stone Cold Steve Austin gave Kane an opportunity for Triple H's World Heavyweight Championship if he rejected Triple H's offer. But Triple H said he would let him fight on one condition. He had to remove his mask if he lost. Kane then took the offer from Stone Cold and the next week they fought. Kane fought for his life in the match (or at least his mask) but with the help of Ric Flair, and Randy Orton Triple H defeated Kane. Kane unmasked and turned heel by turning on friend Rob Van Dam with a Chokeslam, starting a feud. Kane did not bear any scars or burns the next week on Raw. It was later revealed that he was never burnt and the scars were all in his mind. RVD stated that he didn't need the mask; Kane replied by saying he hates RVD. At SummerSlam, Kane defeated RVD using the Tombstone.
After unmasking, Kane was still emotionally unstable and started on a path of destruction.Due to Kane's actions against his mother Linda, Shane McMahon sought vengeance from Kane. At a Last Man Standing Match at Unforgiven in 2003, Kane won after Shane McMahon climbed the event set and missed an Elbow Drop on Kane nearly 40 feet below. During the build up for the match at Survivor Series, Kane attempted to throw Shane into a burning dumpster, only to be thrown in himself. This lead to speculation that Kane was going to leave WWE or don his mask again. However, Kane returned unharmed and determined to destroy Shane McMahon. Kane won their Ambulance Match at Survivor Series that year.
Kane returned later in the night during the "Buried Alive" match between Mr. McMahon and Undertaker. Kane helped Mr. McMahon out of the grave, then threw Undertaker into the grave and buried him alive. During the 2004 Royal Rumble match, Kane was surprised by a video stating the Undertaker's return, and was thrown out of the ring by Booker T, whom he was feuding with at the time. After weeks of being taunted with various scare tactics by the Undertaker, Kane lost to his brother at WrestleMania XX.
Glen Jacobs - Lita
Soon after WrestleMania XX, Kane fell in love with Lita, but Lita was disturbed by Kane's affections. At the beginning of May, Kane kidnapped Lita and supposedly asked her a question before Kane let her go. On the May 17, 2004 episode of RAW, Lita answered yes to Kane's mysterious question. On that same night, Kane won a 20-man Battle Royal to earn Number One Contendership to Chris Benoit's World Heavyweight Championship at the Bad Blood event.
On the June 14, 2004 RAW, Kane mercilessly beat Shawn Michaels, ending his assault by placing Michaels' neck in a folding steel chair and jumping on the chair. Michaels was carried off-stage in a stretcher, portrayed with a worked crushed larynx because of Kane's attack.
Later, Lita announced she was pregnant (also a work) and her then real-life and storyline boyfriend Matt Hardy assumed that he was the child's father. On the June 21, 2004 broadcast of RAW, Kane interrupted Hardy's marriage proposal to Lita, and claimed to be the father of Lita's child. Kane and Hardy were booked to face one another at the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view event in a "Till Death Do Us Part" match, where Lita would have to marry the winner. Kane was victorious in the match and married Lita on the August 23, 2004 edition of RAW.
On the September 13, 2004 episode of RAW, Kane faced a debuting Gene Snitsky. During the match, Snitsky hit Kane in the back with a steel chair, causing Kane to fall on top of Lita. The injuries Lita suffered in the match led to a miscarriage, which immediately caused Kane to turn face and seek revenge against Snitsky for the death of his son, even though it wasn't Snitsky's fault. Kane lost to Snitsky in a steel chain match at Taboo Tuesday. Snitsky then continued to injure Kane's neck with a steel chair, crushing his larynx in exactly the same manner Kane had "injured" Shawn Michaels several months earlier. This injury was also worked, as Jacobs was scheduled to film a WWE-produced movie, See No Evil.
Kane eventually returned and defeated Snitsky at New Year's Revolution. Later, on the January 17, 2005 RAW, he and Snitsky were booked to compete in a No Holds Barred match. The match, show, and feud ended with Kane chokeslamming Snitsky off the stage, with both wrestlers falling through tables and other equipment below. This moment is also memorable for a camera angle which revealed both Kane and Snitsky through the equipment, clearly laughing. The footage is featured in some WWE "botched moments" videos, though mostly for breaking kayfabe.
At WrestleMania 21 Kane participated in the "Money in the Bank" ladder match along with Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Christian, and Edge. He was there as a replacement for Matt Hardy because WWE feared that if Hardy had been there with Edge, it might have turned into a real fight (by that time, Edge and Lita had been involved in a real-life affair). After WrestleMania Kane and Lita were revealed to be happily married and conspiring to frighten Lita's rival Trish, who had been antagonizing Lita about her relationship with Kane. On the April 18, 2005 RAW, a feud between Kane and Trish's new protector Viscera began with Viscera running in and physically manhandling Kane. Kane went on to defeat Viscera at Backlash.
He went in matches with him.
Glen Jacobs - Return to RAW
Kane made his return on October 17th participating in an 18-man battle royale for possible number one contendership to the WWE Championship at Taboo Tuesday. He won, last eliminating Chris Masters by tossing him over the ropes. The following week on RAW, Kane was rumored to have suffered a back injury in a triple threat match against the other two contenders(HBK & Big Show), caused by a botched suplex by Big Show. The next RAW, Kane and Big Show had a Texas Tornado match against the Heart Throbs, hinting that they would be participating in a Tag-Team Championship match at Taboo Tuesday. They disposed of them easily, each trying to outdo each other, then ending by chokeslamming a Heart Throb each. The next week at Taboo Tuesday Kane and the Big Show won the World Tag Team Championship. This is the first time Kane has won a championship without the mask since his Tag Team title with RVD with the mask.
Kane would take part in the main event at the 2005 Survivor Series, as a part of Team RAW alongside The Big Show, Shawn Michaels, Carlito and Chris Masters to take on Team SmackDown! - Batista, Rey Mysterio, John Bradshaw Layfield, Lashley and Randy Orton. In the buildup to the Survivor Series, Kane and Big Show picked on Batista several times - on the November 11 edition of Friday Night SmackDown!, Edge invited Kane and Big Show into the ring, where they double chokeslammed Batista. On the November 21 edition of RAW, they chokeslammed Batista again, this time through a car windshield. And on the November 25 edition of Friday Night SmackDown!, they chokeslammed Batista through the SmackDown! announce table.
At the Survivor Series, Batista would eliminate Kane from the match, but Kane hung around, helping the Big Show to chokeslam Batista once again, leading to Big Show eliminating Batista. However, Team SmackDown! would eventually defeat Team RAW.
After teaming with Big Show to successfully defend their World Tag Team Titles against Snitsky and Tyson Tomko on RAW, Kane once again invaded SmackDown! during a live special on November 29, interfering in Rey Mysterio's interpromotional match with The Big Show. They gave Mysterio a double chokeslam, only for The Undertaker to see Kane off. On the December 2 edition of Friday Night SmackDown!, Kane and Big Show defeated Mysterio and JBL, and were about to attack Mysterio again when Batista ran in and saw Kane and Big Show off.
On December 18th, 2005 at the SmackDown! pay-per-view, Armageddon, the RAW team of Kane and the Big Show successfully defeated the SmackDown! team of Batista and Rey Mysterio cleanly. The match was especially significant since the two teams are each their respective brand's Tag Team Champions. And in addition to that, Kane also earned himself a spot in the Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Championship at New Year's Revolution on January 8th by defeating Triple H in a qualifying match on the final RAW with a double chokeslam courtesy of the Big Show, before Armageddon. On December 27th, 2005 Kane "beat the clock" with a time of 0:28 by double chokeslamming The Heart Throbs and will enter the Elimination Chamber last. On the January 10th edition of RAW, Kane won a qualifying match to enter the Royal Rumble.
