EastEnders merchandise - Annuals and Books
A number of adaptation books based on EastEnders were produced from around 1985 to 1988. Written by Hugh Miller and published by Grafton Books, titles included - Home Fires Burning, Swings & Roundabouts, Good Intentions, The Flower of Albert Square, Hopes and Horizons, Growing Wild and A Place in Life, and some more.
However, the first official EastEnders book was published in 1986, which was simply an annual looking at the lives of the then characters.
In 1987, EastEnders the Inside Story was published, featuring story of how EastEnders made it to the small screen, by the soap's creators Julia Smith and Tony Holland.
In 1991, an EastEnders handbook was created by Hilary Kingsley, similar to that of the annual in 1986.
As EastEnders approached its 10th year on screen, a book by Colin brake titled EastEnders- the First 10 Years: A Celebration was published. Featuring the inside story of the birth of EastEnders, a guide to who lived where in Albert Square, year-by-year guide to the storylines, comings and goings of characters and a selection of the most memorable episodes of each year.
Written by Kate Lock in 1998, EastEnders: Blood Ties - The Life and Loves of Grant Mitchell provides facts about the character of Grant Mitchell that are already known to viewers, it also explores his background, including his Falklands years, in an attempt to explain the source of his behaviour. During 1998, Kate Lock also wrote another EastEnders book during this year, EastEnders: Tiffany's Secret Diary and later in 1999 she also wrote Bianca's Secret Diary.
Kate Lock continued working for the BBC on a number of books, including Who's Who in EastEnders which featured mini biographies of the main characters who have appeared in EastEnders since it started. And also the novelisation of the character of Steve Owen, EastEnders: Steve Owen - Still Waters published in 2001.
Most recently, Rupert Smith wrote EastEnders: 20 years in Albert Square, the official guide to EastEnders' second decade.
