Campeonato Brasileiro 2005 - Série B

After only one year in Série B, storied club Grêmio won the title and promotion to Série A for 2006. Also rising are Santa Cruz. Two teams who made the final-four group but could not make the top two include Náutico and Portuguesa.

There were two incidents in the final match that saw Grêmio defeat Náutico 1 x 0. Prior to the match, Náutico supporters locked the guest team in the locker room (in retaliation for a match in Porto Alegre when the hosts failed to supply drinking water). Later in the match, the referee awarded a penalty to Náutico, and a fracas ensued in which 3 Grêmio players were ejected (in addition one player who had already been sent off). After a 25 minute hiatus before order was restored, Náutico took the penalty (which would have eliminated Grêmio and placed Náutico and Santa Cruz in the top league), but the Grêmio keeper made the save and his team promptly scored the goal that secured them the title, despite having on 6 players on the field.
