Aerial bombing of cities - Aerial bombing since World War II

During the Vietnam War in a campaign starting on June 29, 1966 the cities of Hanoi, the capital of North Vietnam, and Haiphong, the country's largest port, were bombed by the United States Air Force[5]. But the bombing of the city centres was prohibited by "circles of restriction around Hanoi and Haiphong"[6]

In April 1970, US President Nixon announced to the American public that US and South Vietnamese ground forces had entered Cambodia in a campaign aimed at destroying NVA base areas in Cambodia. The US had already been bombing Cambodia for well over a year by that point. Demonstrations took place across college campuses in the US, culminating in the death of four students at Kent State, lending support in the US withdrawal from Vietnam.

The United States has bombed cities on a number of occasions Tripoli (1986), Belgrade (Kosovo War 1999) and Baghdad (1991 and 2003). These attacks were made using smart bombs and non-nuclear cruise missiles.

The September 11, 2001 attack, which killed 3000 people, mostly civilians, can also be viewed as a form of kamikaze aerial bombing of New York by members of al-Qaeda.

Following the September 11, 2001 attack the US Air Force bombed cities, military bases and Taliban soldiers and Al Qaeda militants in Afghanistan, killing approximately 5000.

During the US-led invasion of Iraq and the US-led occupation of Iraq, targets in Iraqi cities have been repeatedly bombed by the US air force and British RAF. During the invasion the US and Britain's stated aim was to bomb Iraqi military and government targets and attempt to assassinate Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. During the occupation their stated aim has been to target the Iraqi insurgency, whom they refer to as terrorists. Some estimates suggest that over 10,000 civilians have been killed, mostly as a result of this bombing. [7]
