Hinduism Dictionary on Vata |  | | vata: (Sanskrit) The banyan tree, Ficus indicus sacred to Siva. Thought to derive from vat, "to surround, encompass" - also called nyagrodha, "growing downwards." Ancient symbol of the Sanatana Dharma. Its relative, the ashvattha, or pipal tree, is given in the Upanishads as a metaphor for creation, with the "roots above and the branches below."
