Suffix name - Practical use of abbreviated forms
Abbreviated suffixes are often used in lieu of the full style and title of people, particularly if their titles are lengthy. For example, in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries the full name, style, and titles are used in formal communications to and from the Monarch, as in:
"Our Right trusty and well-beloved counsellor Sir John Smith, Knight of The Most Noble Order of the Garter, Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, One of Our Counsel learned in the law"
In this example the following forms of address are abbreviated:
- Our Right trusty and well-beloved counsellor: The Rt Hon. (prefix)
- Knight of The Most Noble Order of the Garter: KG
- Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire: KBE
- One of Our Counsel learned in the law: QC
Therefore the abbreviated name is "The Rt Hon. Sir John Smith, KG, KBE, QC".
The arrangement of the forms of address (and therefore also the abbreviations) is governed by rules of precedence. British and Commonwealth orders and decorations have a definite order of precedence within each Realm (see the article for the proper order). The Victoria Cross outranks all other distinctions.
