Spirits: Taping Spirits

All of this discussion on Electronic Voice Phenomena is enough to make me want to try it, and I communicate with Spirit all the time! I imagine there are more curious souls out there who are itching to experiment, and with this in mind, I present some ideas and tips for taping spirits with various equipment you probably already own.

A different approach is called for if you're trying to record ghosts as opposed to spirits. Here, a ghost would be some kind of paranormal activity that is obvious and external to the observer. If you live in a house where strange things are always happening, or you know of a local house or area that is reputed to be haunted, you might take your tape recorder, camera or camcorder and set it up when you expect strange things to occur.

Most communication that is taped is not from loved ones in spirit, but from entities that are unknown to the experimenter. It may even be hard to discern what is being said clearly, or you may receive words in a foreign language. At least at first, don't expect to be having the kind of conversation you might on a telephone.

Taping spirits of deceased loved ones is another matter, and probably more desirable to most experimenters. You don't have to have a "haunted" situation; in fact, it should be easier to do this than to "catch a ghost." I assume that the key to drawing such spirits close and "recording" them in some electronic fashion is similar to creating spirit communication as a medium. If the one you're seeking in spirit is someone you loved dearly, I recommend remembering them with great love. Allow your heart to "swell" with emotion as you think of them, for this swelling feeling is literally their energy connecting with yours. Nothing draws loved ones in spirit close like remembering them with intense affection.

With tape recording, usually you won't hear anything unusual while you're taping; it's when you replay the tape that "other" voices or sounds can be heard. Somehow the recorder picks up voices not heard by human ears. These may be at a low level (you might have to crank up the volume to perceive them later) or they may be obvious. Many people have "accidentally" caught spirit voices on tape when they were not even trying. I've heard stories of children playing with tape recorders while their parents were in the room, and later, when they went to listen to the tape, not only did they hear the sounds of the children playing and any background noises, but there were also other voices that came through clearly and even addressed some of the people present by name.

Some researchers suggest that some kind of "white noise" in the background is required for the spirits to "influence" to create audible sounds in our dimension. This can be provided by an older radio receiver (not a digital tuner) which should be tuned between stations so that you get only white noise and no radio signals. It's recommended that the radio be tuned into 1450-1475 kHz. If white noise is all that is required, you might try using a "white noise" machine if you have one. (Experiment!)

To try your luck at taping loved ones in spirit, set up a regular tape recorder and a brand new blank tape. Establish your white noise source, if you're going to take that approach. A regular tape recorder should work; most authorities on EVP recommend listening to the tape with headphones. (Again, some say it is essential, others have had success without it). An external microphone (external to the recorder) is also recommended, and should be placed a few feet away from you. Obviously, you'll want to try this experiment in as quiet a place as possible. Eliminate any sources of outside noise. Some researchers also say that clear weather (a clear sky) enhances reception, so choose a time when the weather is good.

Get comfortable and quiet, and focus on the person you're seeking in your mind and heart. Reach out to them with love, and ask for a message. Then be very quiet, and simply allow the tape to run on "record" for at least a few minutes. Later, play back the tape and listen to it with earphones, and see if you have picked up any anomalous sounds.

If you hear anything that you don't think you heard while taping, turn up the volume or if possible, slow down your play back. Through careful attention, you may be able to discern voices or words in what may at first take just sound like "noises."

If you don't at first succeed, keep trying! Many who have become pioneers in EVP spent months of unsuccessful attempts before having big breakthroughs. Don't give up. Rewind and listen to it several times. Adjust the volume. Try again. Remember that the spirits communicating may be as new to this (affecting white noise or creating "sound" in our dimension) as you are to recording. It can be a tricky business. Imagine that you're going to try to "create sound" in the astral plane, and you may get a better idea for how this could take some practice on both ends!

The greatest tool you have here is a clear and open mind. I'm all for questioning and using common sense, but you're much more likely to get good results (in this and everything else in life), if you have a sense of true open-mindedness, and really believe that it's POSSIBLE to record voices from spirit.

It's possible to connect with spirit via other technology, such as televisions, VCRs and computers. Many people (researchers and ordinary folks) have had images of loved ones in spirit appear spontaneously on television screens. One pair of researchers, Maggie and Jules Harsch-Fischbach, began with voice phenomena, then moved to receiving images via television screens, and eventually established sustained computer contact, where pictures and messages would be left from spirits on unattended computer monitors.
