Sino-British Joint Declaration - Acknowledgement
According to some news reports, Deng Xiaoping at one time called Margaret Thatcher "an arrogant bitch" during the handover talks. Mrs Thatcher had asked Deng Xiaoping to extend the lease of Hong Kong for another 50 years. Deng was outraged, but politely pointed out that if Britain was not planning to hand back Hong Kong, he would take it back by force if necessary. In reply, Thatcher pointed that she didn't have to be told that, but that Deng's statement "I would rather recover Hong Kong poverty stricken than let the British have another period of administration over Hong Kong" showed the true mind of communism in her opinion, that it was 'not concerned about the prosperity, the well-being of the people'.[1]
The footage of Margaret Thatcher tripping on the steps in Tiananmen Square has been used numerous times in British political satire TV shows.
