In Ancient Vedic Hinduism, Savitŗi (also Savitŗ, Savitar, nominative singular Savitā) is a solar deity (see Deva) and one of the Adityas. He is a male deity and is not to be confused with the feminine word Sāvitrī which refers to a Vedic mantra dedicated to him, or a goddess representing a personification of this mantra, often identifies with the Devi Saraswati.

The famous gāyatrī mantra of Rig Veda 3.62.10, being dedicated to the deity Savitŗi, is hence called Sāvitrī. It is considered to be among the holiest mantras of Hinduism.

The word Savitŗi means impeller, rouser or vivifier (of good thoughts). The Deva is described in the Vedas as having golden arms, hands, hair, etc. He is sometimes identified with, and at other times distinguished from the chief Sun deity Surya. He also has a number of other beautiful Vedic hymns invoked in his praise.

The philosopher-sage Sri Aurobindo wrote a 24,000 line poem on the Savitri story, in which he described the involution and evolution of the cosmos and of consciousness.
