Yoga: The Principles of Yoga

The Principles of Yoga

In this section, the five principles of Yoga will be detailed. These are the foundations of Yoga Practice; Correct Relaxation, Proper Breathing, Good Exercise, Positive Thinking and Suitable Diet.

Correct Relaxation - In order to attain this state of mind and body, the nervous system needs to be revived. Tension in the muscles is often the main obstacle to overcome. Once the relaxed feeling is achieved, it will be possible to drop all fears and worries. The body will also be enabled to conserve energy.

Proper Breathing - Proper breathing implies using all parts of the lungs to encourage maximal oxygen intake. This means taking slow, deep and rhythmical breaths. It is essential to be able to control the span of your inhalation, exhalation and pauses between breaths. Regulating the flow of breathing or ÔPrana' can boost energy levels while calming the mind and enabling a more focused mind.

Good Exercise - This principle revolves around physical movement. The exercise is achieved through a series of Yoga postures or ÔAsana' which concentrate on all parts of the body, stretching and toning the muscles and ligaments, developing suppleness of the spine and the joints, and improving circulation of the blood. Yoga postures need to be guided by the breath. The co-ordination of movement and breath is important as it induces physical strength and mental relaxation. Asana also contributes to spiritual growth.

Positive Thinking - The mind controls the way we live. Mental choices strongly affect the health of the body. Optimism and positive thinking assist in achieving peace of mind. Meditating is often the best way to remove negative thoughts.

Suitable Diet - Nutrition is a vital part of wellbeing. The mental state and spiritual awareness are easily affected by an improper diet. A proper diet which nourishes the mind and body consists of natural foods. Excessive wheat and cow dairy consumption is not recommended as bacteria breed on these foods in the gut which in turn creates large amounts of mucus in the system. Over-eating or consuming vast amounts of comfort food (i.e. when upset) can block senses and lead to diet related ailments such as obesity or diabetes. Therefore, diet in Yoga suggests eating in moderation to help keep the body light and the mind calm. A correct diet will also strengthen the immune system.
