pranayama: Any yogic regulation of breathing designed to control the prana (cosmic energy, life force, or vital energy) inside one's body. The Sanskrit word yama literally means self-control. Characterizations of pranayama include breath awareness, deep scientific breathing exercises, and psychic breathing exercise.
