Meditation for Beginners: Meditation on the GuruBy www.anandaindia.org
Meditation for Beginners: Meditation on the Guru Call to your guru in meditation. At the start of your meditation, ask one of these great souls to help you in your meditative efforts. After your practice of the techniques, ask him to help you go deep in the Spirit, or to give you a clear perception of truth, or a solution to some spiritual problem. Above all, pray to him, "Introduce me to God." Draw from him, by the magnetic power of your devotion, the power to become like him - an awakened child of the Infinite. Concentrate on the guru's image, especially on his eyes, visualizing him at the spiritual eye, between the eyebrows, in the middle of the forehead. Call to him there deeply. The spiritual eye (kutastha chaitanya) is the "broadcasting station" in the body. If you send your thoughts out strongly from this point to any divinely awakened being, he will receive them, and will respond to your loving call. The "receiving set" in the body is the heart center, or anahat chakra, opposite the heart in the spine. Feel the guru's responsive presence there. When the awareness of his presence comes to you, it will be very distinct. It will also be distinctly different from that of every other guru. The presence of Jesus conveys a feeling of infinite love and compassion; of Yogananda, one of divine love and joy; of Sri Yukteswar, one of deep wisdom. One might wonder if there was danger, through discipleship, of reducing oneself to a mere spiritual echo of another human being. There is not. In fact, quite the opposite happens. A true guru's influence is magnetic, not hypnotic. He does not impose his vibrations on others, but offers them-as one would extend a hand to someone floundering in a ditch, only to help him to lift himself up. Disciples that keep the guru constantly in mind - even imagining that they are seeing with his eyes, tasting with his tongue, etc.- quickly find themselves rising out of human bondage to that plane wherein alone the will becomes truly free.
