Masculinity - Sociology
Sociologist Janet Saltzman Chafetz (1974, 35-36) describes seven areas of traditional masculinity:
- Physical--virile, athletic, strong, brave. Unconcerned about appearance and aging;
- Functional--breadwinner, provider;
- Sexual--sexually aggressive, experienced. Single status acceptable;

- Other Personal Characteristics--success-orientated, ambitious; proud, egotistical, moral, trustworthy; decisive, competitive, uninhibited, adventurous.

Stereotypic notions of masculinity, such as all of the above, are socially constructed and thus differ across time periods and cultures.
