As of the census² of 2000, there are 35,226 people, 13,436 households, and 8,894 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (62/mi²). There are 14,432 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.35% White, 0.94% Black or African American, 1.19% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 5.06% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 8.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,436 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.80% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,807, and the median income for a family is $45,073. Males have a median income of $30,631 versus $21,343 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,804. 11.20% of the population and 7.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.00% of those under the age of 18 and 11.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
