Kashaya-vastra, kasaya-vastra | | | Kashaya-vastra kasaya-vastra (Sanskrit) Red-colored cloth; in the Puranas, the rishi Vaisishtha was asked by the gods to bring the sun, Surya, to satyaloka. The sun told him the worlds would be destroyed if he left, but the sage offered to place his kashaya-vastra in place of the sun's disk, which he did. This red-colored cloth is the visible body of the sun. Blavatsky comments that "the ascetic's dress being, as all know, dyed expressly into a red-yellow hue, a colouring matter with pinkish patches on it, rudely representing the vital principle in man's blood, -- the symbol of the vital principle in the sun, or what is now called chromosphere" (BCW 5:157).
