*So far, there have been only two officers conferred the rank: Field Marshal K M Cariappa -- the first Indian Commander-in-Chief (a post since abolished)-- and Field Marshal S H F J Manekshaw -- a distinguished former Army Chief who led the Army in the 1971 war with Pakistan.
