History of sex - Politics of sex
With the rise of government and laws, personal behaviors, including sex, became increasingly politicized.
The politics (and, therefore, laws) in regards to sex vary widely. In several countries (and different states of countries) there are or were, laws, both civil and religious, forbidding some sexual practices or to forbid sexual intercourse between partners of difference races. Laws that forbid to have sex with a person younger than a fixed age are very common.
The laws generally fit into the following types.
- Partner laws regulate the choice of the partner.
- Activity laws regulate the choice of the sexual activity e. g. a law that prohibits genital-genital intercourse.
Partner laws are of the following types.
- Group laws regulate the race, religion, creed, caste, community and/or group of the partner e. g. a law that prohibits sexual activity between blood-relatives.
- Gender laws regulate the choice of the gender of the partner e. g. a law that prohibits sexual activity between partners of the same sex.
- Age laws regulate the age of the partner. These are of two types.
'Absolute age laws' regulate the absolute age or the age of consent of the partner, ranging from 9 to 21.
'Relative age laws' regulate the difference between the ages of the partners e. g. a law that prohibits the woman being elder to the man.
- Number laws regulate the number of partners for sexual activity at a single time (e. g. polyandry, monoandry, polygamy, monogamy) or at different times in life (e. g. sequential monogamy).
- Type laws, regulate the type of a partner, such as animals (zoophilia) or the dead (Necrophilia).
- Time laws regulate the time of the partner e. g. a law that prohibits the woman from engaging in sexual activity while she menstruates.
