The precise source of the HA! HA! guy's humor, like most memes, remains hard to peg. One person has commented that one may find the humor if one stares at the image's teeth for several seconds, then imagines the character yelling "HA HA!" The custom portion of the text generally appears formatted as two lines, the first in a slightly smaller font than the second -— a format that allows jokes to be phrased in a natural leadup-to-punchline manner. The relative lack of expression in the man's eyes is in strange contrast to the almost maniacal set of the mouth, giving the face a surreal and not entirely lifelike quality. Also, the separation of HA! and HA! by the central figure breaks up the natural flow of the phrase, making it seem stilted and, thus, more humorous.
Snippets of rap lyrics have been proved to be particularly well-suited to appropriate for usage below the HA! HA! guy. Many HA! HA! guy iterations make liberal use of leetspeak. The very common "Ha ha charade you are" is taken from the Pink Floyd song Pigs (Three Different Ones).
