The Northern Territory Legislative Assembly has 25 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member constituencies. The voting system is the same as for the House of Representatives. The Territory has never had an upper house.

Nomination as a candidate requires:
- nomination by six electors; or
- nomination by the Registered Officer of a political party (registration of an party requires 200 members).
- deposit of $200. The deposit is returned if the candidate gains 20% of first preference vote.
