Dark Magician - The Dark Magician Series
Because of Dark Magician being a central card in the series, other cards have been designed so as to center around the card. Most of these cards are used by Yugi Mutou in the anime.
Dark Magician - Dark Sage
- Attribute: Dark
- Type: Spellcaster/Effect
- Level: 9
- Attack Points: 2800
- Defence Points: 3200
- Card Description: This card can only be Special Summoned from your hand or your Deck by offering 1 "Dark Magician" on your side of the field as a Tribute when you succeed in the effect of "Time Wizard". At that time, select 1 Spell Card from your Deck, add it to your hand, and then shuffle your Deck.
Only seen once throughout the entire anime series of Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yugi uses it against Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler) in the Duelist Kingdom final round against Joey. When Joey used his Time Wizard in an attempt to destroy Yugi's monsters and evolve his Baby Dragon into Thousand Dragon he indirectly created this monster from the Dark Magician. He used Spell Cards from his deck that were gained from Dark Sage's effect in order to halt Joey's attacks and he ultimately won the duel.
Dark Magician - Dark Paladin
- Attribute: Dark
- Type: Spellcaster/Fusion/Effect
- Level: 8
- Attack Points: 2900
- Defence Points: 2400
- Card Description: "Dark Magician" + "Buster Blader"
This monster can only be Fusion Summoned. While this card is face-up on the Field, you may discard 1 card from your hand to negate the activation and destroy a Spell Card. Increase this monster's ATK strength by 500 points for each Dragon-Type Monster on the Field and in each player's Graveyard."
See the Dark Paladin article for more information.
Dark Magician - Dark Flare Knight
- Attribute: Dark
- Type: Warrior/Fusion/Effect
- Level: 6
- Attack Points: 2200
- Defence Points: 800
- Card Description: "Dark Magician" + "Flame Swordsman"
Any damage to the controller of this card from battle involving this monster becomes 0. When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle Special Summon 1 "Mirage Knight" from your hand or Deck.
Dark Flare Knight is only seen once during the anime, where Yugi and Joey (as Jonouchi is known in the English anime) face the Big Five in the Virtual World arc. When faced with the Big 5's Mythic Dragon, Yugi and Joey combine their Deck Masters, Dark Magician and Flame Swordsman respectively, to create this monster. Yugi then uses Dark Flare Knight to assault Mythic Dragon and although it is destroyed, Yugi and Joey take no damage and Mirage Knight is summoned to the field.
Dark Magician - Mirage Knight
- Attribute: Light
- Type: Warrior/Effect
- Level: 8
- Attack Points: 2800
- Defence Points: 2000
- Card Description: This card can only be Special Summoned by the effect of Dark Flare Knight. When this card battles another monster, during Damage Calculation increase the ATK of this card by the original ATK of the opponent’s monster. During the End Phase after this card was involved in battle, remove this card from play.
Only seen along with Dark Flare Knight when Yugi and Joey battle the Big Five, Mirage Knight is the method from which Yugi and Joey defeat the Big Five's colossal Mythic Dragon. Due to its ability, it can increase its attack points by those of the monster it is attacking, which gave it 7800 attack points. Furthermore, it was a Light-Attribute monster, the only type capable of defeating the Mythic Dragon, which it did in a vicious scythe attack. However, the Big Five recovered by using A Deal with Dark Ruler, which replaced their Deck Master with Berserk Dragon. Ultimately, Yugi and Joey would need to combine their skills to play Dark Magician Knight to destroy it.
Dark Magician - Dark Magician Knight
- Attribute Dark
- Type: Warrior/Effect
- Level: 7
- Attack Points: 2500
- Defence Points: 2200
- Card Description: This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned except by the effect of "Knight's Title" If this card is Special Summoned successfully, select 1 card from the field and destroy it.
Dark Magician Knight is only seen during Yugi and Joey's duel against the Big Five during their final duel. When the Big Five summon Berserk Dragon, Joey eventually plays Knight's Title to transform Dark Magician into Dark Magician Knight (Dark Magician Knight does not have a destruction ability in the anime). Using Flame Swordsman's Deck Master ability, he transfers Flame Swordsman's remaining attack points to Dark Magician Knight, giving it enough attack points to destroy Berserk Dragon and win the duel for the two.
Dark Magician - Skilled Dark Magician
- Attribute: Dark
- Type: Spellcaster/Effect
- Level: 4
- Attack Points: 1900
- Defense Points: 1700
- Card Text: Each time you or your opponent activates 1 Spell Card, put 1 Spell Counter on this card (max 3). You can Special Summon 1 “Dark Magician” from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard in face-up Attack or Defense Position by offering this monster with 3 Spell Counters as a Tribute during your Main Phase.
One of the most powerful support cards for the Dark Magician, Skilled Dark Magician is only seen in Yugi's duel against Vivian Wong during the Grand Championship arc. After Yugi's defense of Big Shield Gardna is destroyed by Vivian's Dragon Lady, he plays this card in order to summon his Dark Magician. With three Spell Cards, he gives Skilled Dark Magician three Spell Counters and sacrifices it to play Dark Magician. With the Buster Blader in his hand, he combines them with Polymeriation to play Dark Paladin, whose ability to increase its power by 500 for every Dragon-Type monster in any player's Graveyard or field allows it to defeat Vivian with ease.
Dark Magician - Magician of Black Chaos
- Attribute: Dark
- Type: Spellcaster/Ritual
- Level: 8
- Attack Points: 2800
- Defense Points: 2600
- Card Text: This card can only be Ritual Summoned with the Ritual Spell Card "Dark Magic Ritual". You must offer monsters whose total Level Stars equal 8 or more as a Tribute from the field or your hand.
A Ritual Monster boasting considerable statistics, this monster has only been used by Yugi twice throughout the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! series. The first time was against Maximillion Pegasus, where Yugi used it against Pegasus' Thousand Eyes Restrict. With the aid of Kuriboh and the Spell Card Multiply, the Thousand Eyes Restrict was crippled and Yugi used the Magician of Black Chaos to annihilate the Thousand Eyes Restrict, winning him the duel.
The next time it is used is in the Virtual World arc, where Yugi uses it against Noah Kaiba. He summons this card by sacrificing Valkyrion the Magna Warrior with Dark Magic Ritual and it stands alongside his Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl. His attack is ultimately blocked when Noah uses Chaos Barrier to cause Magician of Black Chaos to destroy the Dark Magician Girl. Noah ultimately destroys this card using the power of Hino-Kaga-Tsuchi in combination with the Equip Spell Card Flaming Fist in order to destroy the Magician of Black Chaos.
Unlike its counterpart, Dark Magician of Chaos, Magician of Black Chaos does give Dark Magician Girl an additional 300 attack points when it is positioned in the Graveyard.
Dark Magician - Dark Magician of Chaos
- Attribute: Dark
- Type: Spellcaster/Effect
- Level: 8
- Attack Points: 2800
- Defense Points: 2600
- Card Text: When this card is Normal Summoned or Special Summoned successfully, you can add 1 Spell Card from your Graveyard to your hand. A monster that is destroyed by this monster as a result of battle is removed from play instead of going to the Graveyard. When this card is destroyed or removed from the field, it is removed from play.
Yugi is never seen using this card although it apparently was in his deck since when Dimitri (Kagurazaka) used it in the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX series when he steals Yugi's deck and duels Jaden Yuki. After Jaden summons Elemental Hero Bladedge, Dmitrii uses Dedication through Light and Darkness to sacrifice his Dark Magician to summon this card. Using its ability, Dmitrii is able to retrieve his Monster Reincarnation from the Graveyard and devastates Jaden's ranks. It is destroyed when Jaden uses the Field Spell Card Skyscraper to increase the attack points of Elemental Hero Flame Wingman to 3100, giving it enough power to destroy the Dark Magician of Chaos and severely damage Dmitrii's Life Points with its effect.
The Dark Magician of Chaos is notable for being one of the two monsters that require two tributes that are actually considered tournament level cards, with the other being Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys. Its ability to return a Spell Card from the Graveyard at no cost is only rivaled by Magician of Faith, who is a much weaker monster. Furthermore, this card commands a powerful field prescence and its other ability disables certain effects such as that of Sangan. Its only true weakness is that it is removed from play when it is destroyed on the field although this can be abused using cards such as Dimension Fusion and Return from a Different Dimension.
Note that Dark Magician of Chaos does not give Dark Magician Girl an additional 300 attack points when it is in the Graveyard. Only its ritual counterpart, Magician of Black Chaos, does.
Dark Magician - Sorcerer of Dark Magic
- Attribute: Dark
- Type: Spellcaster/Effect
- Level: 9
- Attack Points: 3200
- Defence Points: 2800
- Card Text: This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card cannot be Special Summoned exept by offering 2 level 6 or higher Spellcaster type monsters on your side of the field as a tribute. As long as this card remains face up on the field you can negate the activation of trap cards and destroy them.
This card is only ever seen in Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light. In the movie, it had an additional ability that allowed it to lower the attack points of all monsters on the opponent's field by 500 for every Spellcaster Sub-Type Monster that was in the player's Graveyard. This effect allowed Yugi to cripple Kaiba's Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon due to the fact that Yugi had three Spellcaster Sub-Type Monsters in his Graveyard. Its ability to negate Trap Cards was later used when Kaiba utilized Peten the Dark Clown combined with the Trap Card Deck Destruction Virus in an attempt to devastate the monsters in Yugi's deck. However, the Sorceror of Dark Magic's ability allowed Yugi to negate the trap, effectively destroying Kaiba's strategy. Unfortunately for Yugi, Kaiba was able to summon his Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon whose ability rendered all targeting effects against it useless (because the effect of the Sorceror that doesn't exist targets the monster). With its attack strength not dimished, the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon obliterated Yugi's Sorceror of Dark Magic.
Dark Magician - Amulet Dragon
- Attribute: Dark
- Type: Dragon/Effect
- Level: 8
- Attack Points: 2900
- Defense Points: 2500
- Card Text: This card cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. This card can only be Special Summoned by the effect of "Eye of Timaeus" and sending a "Dark Magician" from the field to the Graveyard. When this card is Special Summoned, remove all Spell Cards in the Graveyard from play and increase this card's attack points by 300 times the number of cards removed in this manner. This ability can only be used once per Main Phase.
Played against Rafael in one of the last Orichalcos duels, Yugi summons Amulet Dragon by using the Eye of Timaeus combined with the Dark Magician. Its ability to increase its power for each Spell Card eventually boosts it to 5300 attack points, enough to destroy Rafael's prize card, Guardian Eatos. However, this act destroys Guardian Eatos, the representation of Rafael's good side, and summons Guardian Dreadscythe, the representation fo Rafael's dark side. Using the Equip Spell Card Reaper Scythe - Dreadscythe as well as Dreadscythe's ability to increase its attack power by 500 for every sacrifice of a Guardian monster on the field, Dreadscythe's attack points become 5500, enough to destroy Amulet Dragon.
Note: Amulet Dragon is not a real card. It only exists in the anime.
