Damodar (name of Krishna)

The 367th name of Krishna in the Vishnu sahasranama is Daamodarah (also spelled "Damodar" and "Damodara"). Several purports exist.

The first meaning taken by various Vaishnava adherents is "the Lord when He was tied with a cord (daama) around His waist (udara)", denoting a divine pastime in which Krishna's mother Yasoda bound Krishna for being mischevious.

Another purport is "One who is known through a mind which is purified (Udara) by means of self-control (dama)". Yet another purport is "One in whose bosom rests the entire universe."

A popular bhajan that celebrates Krishna as Damodara is the Sri Damodarastaka (found in the Padma Purana of Krsna Dvaipayana Vyasa, spoken by Satyavrata Muni in a conversation with Narada Muni and Saunaka Rsi.). It is often sang by devotees during the month of Kaartika, and is very popular amongst the Vaishnavas of ISKCON.
