Clay court (tennis)

A clay court is one of the four different types of tennis court. The French Open uses clay courts. Clay courts are made of crushed shale, stone or brick, and can be either red or green. The red clay is slower than the green, or Har-Thru(c) "American" clay.

Clay court tennis - In the building

The clay ground is perhaps used the most in the world. The realization of the grounds of the houses or buildings public is done in three principal ways according to clay rate's in the raw ground. If there is an average clay rate the ground is humidified until becoming a thick mud which is spread out. Drying must be done slowly. If there is a strong clay rate, the ground is used as withdrawn from the ground - 7 to 10 % of moisture - and compacted by pressing with the feet, the rammer or the pneumatic tamper. If there is a weak clay rate one straw or hay and droppings or dung (cob) add.

Clay court tennis - Types of clay

There are two different types of clay:

Clay court tennis - Red clay

Red clay is made of crushed brick that is packed to make the court, it is then covered with a topping of additional crushed particles. This surface is the most common in Europe and South America.

Clay court tennis - Green clay

Green clay is similar to red clay. Green clay is packed to make the subsurface, it is then covered with a topping. These clay courts are found in the Eastern and Southern parts of the United States.
