Carmelites of Mary Immaculate

The Carmelites OF Mary Immaculate is an Eastern Catholic religious order for men. It belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. It was the first such religious order within India. The first monastery of the order was established on May 11, 1831 in Mannanam, Kerala, India. But it quickly grew. The order was founded by Father Thomas Palackal, Father Thomas Porukara and Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara.

It is dedicated to the renewal of church life by the training of priests, the missions, the education of the youth, and social service.

In the year 2003 the community counted 3226 members (7 bishops; 2100 priests; 55 brothers; 482 students of philosophy and theology; 208 novices; 374 candidates) in 13 provinces (all in India) and 263 religious houses.
