Carl Lwanga

Carl Lwanga (or Charles Lwanga) (1865-1887) is a Roman Catholic saint.

From 1885-1887 many Christians were put to death in Uganda by King Mwanga II. Many of them were officials in the court of the king or otherwise very close to the king, including the priest Carl Lwanga. Carl Lwanga and 21 other Catholics, as well as a number of Anglicans, were put to death, some by the sword, others by burning alive. The ire of the king was particularly inflamed against the Christians because they refused to accede to demands to participate in homosexual unions.

Carl Lwanga and his companions in death were canonized in 1964 by Pope Paul VI. Although the Anglicans were not canonized (as non-Catholics, this would have been impossible), their martyrdom was recognized by the Pope.
