Albrecht, Duke of Bavaria

Albrecht Luitpold Ferdinand Michael Duke of Bavaria, Franken and Swabia, Count Palatine of the Rhine (May 3, 1905 - July 8, 1996), was the son of Rupprecht, Crown Prince of Bavaria and his first wife, Duchess Marie Gabriele in Bavaria. He was the one surviving child from that marriage. His paternal grandfather was Ludwig III of Bavaria, the last King of Bavaria who was deposed in 1918.

The Wittelsbachs were opposed to the regime of Nazi Germany and in 1940 Albrecht took his family to his estate at Sárvár, Vas, Hungary. In October 1944, when Germany occupied Hungary, the Wittelsbachs were arrested and imprisoned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp at Oranienburg, Brandenburg. In April 1945 they were moved to the Dachau concentration camp, where they were liberated by the United States Army.

Albrecht became Head of the Royal Family of Bavaria with the death of his father on August 2, 1955.

Albrecht Duke of Bavaria - Marriage and Children

On 1930, Albrecht married Maria Franziska Juliana Johanna Countess Draskovich von Trakostjan (1904-1969). Four children were born from this marriage:

• Marie Gabrielle Antonia José Princess of Bavaria (born 1931). Married Georg, Prince von Waldburg zu Zeil und Trauchburg (born 1928) and has issue.
• Marie Charlotte Juliana Princess of Bavaria (born 1931, Gabrielle's twin). Married Paul Prince von Quadt zu Wykradt und Isny (born 1930) and has issue.
• Franz, Duke of Bavaria (born July 14, 1933).
• Max-Emanuel Ludwig Maria Prince of Bavaria, Duke in Bavaria (born 1937), married Elizabeth Countess Douglas (born 1940) and they have four daughters, who wear the titles Princess of Bavaria, Duchess in Bavaria.
  • Sophie (born October 28, 1967). Married Prince Alois of Liechtenstein.
  • Marie Caroline Hedwig Eleonore (born 1969). Married Philipp Duke von Württemberg.
  • Helene Eugenie Maria Donatha Mechthild (born 1972).
  • Elizabeth Marie Charlotte Franziska (born 1973). Married Daniel Terberger.
  • Maria Anna Henriette Gabrielle Julia (born 1973).

On 1971, Albrecht remarried to Marie-Jenke Clara Clementine Antonia Stephanie Walburga Paula Countess Keglevich von Buzin (1921-1983). No children were born from this marriage, since she was already 50 when they got married.
