Akasha (vampire)
Akasha is the name of the title character in Anne Rice's novel The Queen of the Damned.
In Rice's fictional vampire universe, Akasha is the very first vampire created.
As told in the novel, Akasha was originally a Queen in Kemet, she and her King Enkil wanted their people to turn away from their cannibalistic ways. She was fascinated by the spirits of the supernatural, calling the "red haired witch sisters" Maharet and Mekare to her court to commune with the spirits. Amel is a spirit that frequently fed and communicated with the sisters, and in defense of them, struck out against Akasha.
When the King and Queen were attacked by supporters of cannibalism and the spirit of Amel, her soul rose from her body, as it did, the spirit Amel joined with it and re-entered her body through the wounds, fusing with her heart and brain. Amel was a particularly dangerous spirit with a deadly lust for human blood, thus passing it to Akasha. Akasha then took her king Enkil, and fed upon their own people in their court of "justice."
Akasha was the life force of the vampires, the survival of every other vampire depended on the survival of Akasha herself. Akasha was however destroyed by Mekare, one half of a pair of twins who are powerful witches.
According to the book, both Maharet and Mekare devour Akasha's heart, and brain (vessel of the core of Amel), much like the customs from which they originated. They are then the new Queens, the new life force of the vampires.
Akasha was the lover of Lestat de Lioncourt, a main character in The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.
