Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań - History
The University of Poznań - one of the major Polish universities, opened on May 7th, 1919. For the next 20 years it educated students in law, economy, medicine, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, agriculture and forestry.
Its original name was the Piast University. Since the moment of its foundation many distinguished scholars from all over the world as well as many outstanding personalities from politics and the fine arts have received the Honorary Degree of Doctor Honoris Causa of the University. The few names that ought to be mentioned in this respect are: Marshall Józef Piłsudski, Marshall Ferdinand Foch, Maria Skłodowska-Curie, and Ignacy Paderewski.
On May 7, 1919, which marked the four hundredth anniversary of the foundation of The Lubrański Academy, the Commencement Ceremony of the Piast University took place. This was the name of the Poznań University in the first year of its existence.
In 1920 famous sociologist Florian Znaniecki founded the first Polish department of sociology at this university. It was one of the first such departments in Europe.
The University was closed by the Nazi Occupation in 1939 and reopened in much smaller form only after the end of WWII. Until 1955 it was officially named the University of Poznań. However, since the year 1955 the University has been named after Adam Mickiewicz, greatest Polish Romantic poet of the first half of the 19th century. According to reform, in 1950, the Medical Faculty with the section of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Poznań were detached to form an independent school - Poznań University of Medical Sciences.
Among its most famous graduates are mathematicians who broke the Enigma machine: Marian Rejewski, Henryk Zygalski, and Jerzy Różycki.
While many building of the Poznań University still remain scattered in areas near the city centre and older borroughs, all the structure is being moved to the Campus in Morasko. As of 2006, Faculties of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science, Chemistry and Geographical and Geological Science have already shifted to the new location.
