The Emperor Sri Achyuta Raya was a ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire of south India. He was the much younger brother of Emperor Sri Krishna Deva Raya the Great, whom he succeeded in 1529. Achyuta Raya ruled until his death in 1542. Upon his death, the succession was disputed; his nephew, Sadashiva, finally became king while yet a child, under the regency of Aliya Rama Raya, a son-in-law of Krishnadevaraya. Achyuta Deva Raya

The Tiruvengalanatha Temple was built at Hampi during his reign but was more popularly known by his name as Achyutaraya Temple than the diety Lord Venkateshwara to whom the temple was dedicated.
