Public school in the British Isles is a label applied to leading fee-paying independent schools in England and Wales. In Scotland and Ireland it is not commonly used in this sense for schools in those countries (and indeed in Scotland and Northern Ireland the phrase has long been an alternative name for council schools in the state sector). A public school (in the independent sense) usually teaches children from the ages of 11 (for girls) or 13 (for boys) to 18, and was traditionally a single-sex boarding school, although many now acc ...

Ireland and England were both being raided by Vikings in the early 840's. The Vikings were beginning to establish settlements along the Irish coasts at this time and began to spend the winter months there. Vikings started settlements in Waterford, Wexford, and most famously, Dublin. 914: Encyclopedia II - Kingdom of Galicia - The Suebic Kingdom

The Suebic kingdom of Galicia lasted from 410 to 584 and seems to have enjoyed relatively stable government for most of that time. Historians like José António Lopes Silva, the translator of Idatius' chronicles, the primary written source for the period, find that the essential temper of Galician culture was established in the blending of Ibero-Roman culture with that of the Suebi [1]. As with most Germanic invasions, the number of the original Suebi invaders is estimated at fewer than 30,000, settling mainly in the zones around Bra ...

914: Encyclopedia II - Itri - History

First historical record of Itri appeared in 914. Its name was derived from the Latin word iter, meaning "trip", as the city lies on the old Roman Via Appia road. Other scholars say it stemmed from the cult of the Eastern God Mithra. In Roman times Itri could have no more than a post station. In the Middle Ages the population grew, and three lines of walls were built to protect the people living around the castle. Itri was part of the duchy of Gaeta and was a possession of the Dell'Aquila family, dukes of Fondi. In modern times Itri was part of the Kingdom of Naples. In 1503 Consalvo of Cordova defeated the French army under the comma ...

914: Encyclopedia II - Flat-4 - Automobile use

Volkswagen used air-cooled flat-4s extensively in their early days, in the VW Beetle and most early VW designs. Porsche also used the VW engine in the early Porsche 356. This engine was replaced by a Porsche designed flat-4 in the late 356s and the 912. The 914 that replaced the 912 was built in partnership with VW using a VW engine. VW used a water-cooled flat-4 in the T3 until 1991. Citroën used an air-cooled flat-4 on the Ami Super, GS, GSA and Axel. Alfa Romeo introduced a water cooled flat-4 on the Alfa Romeo Alfasud. 914: Encyclopedia II - History of early Arab Egypt - The Fatimid Period

Jauhar immediately began the building of a new city, Cairo, to furnish quarters for the army which he had brought. A palace for the Caliph and a mosque for the army were immediately constructed, which for many centuries remained the centre of Muslim learning. However, the Carmathians of Damascus under Hasan al-Asam advanced through Palestine to Egypt, and in the autumn of 971 Jauhar found himself besieged in his new city. By a timely sortie, preceded by the administration of bribes to various officers in the Carmathian h ...

J. R. R. Tolkien seems to have been much influenced by Warwick (where he was married) and by its Mercian connections: Lynn Forest-Hill, in an article in the Times Literary Supplement (TLS 8 July 2005 pp 12-13) argues cogently that two important settlements in Tolkien's work were modelled on Warwick - Edoras closely on the early town, and Minas Tirith more remotely on the Norman; and that aspects of the plot of the Lord of the Rings are paralleled ...
