83: Encyclopedia II - Dad's Army - The film

As was the case with many British sitcoms of that era, Dad's Army was in 1970 made into a feature film. Backers Columbia Pictures imposed what seemed arbitrary changes (such as recasting Mavis Pike - Liz Frazer took the role - and filming outdoor scenes in Chalfont St Giles rather than Thetford), which made the cast unhappy. The director Norman Cohen, who was also responsible for the original idea to make th ...

83: Encyclopedia II - Community High School Ann Arbor Michigan - Early history

By the early 1970s, Ann Arbor had developed as reputation as one of the most liberal campus towns in the country. The city played host to numerous radical political organizations, eventually electing three members of the left-wing Human Rights Party to its city council. Meanwhile, the teenage group Youth Liberation of Ann Arbor was carving out a role as a national pioneer in the nascent youth empowerment movement, with one fifteen-year-old member's insurgent school-board candidacy earning her 1,300 write-in votes, or eight percent of the tot ...

83: Encyclopedia II - Community High School Ann Arbor Michigan - Merger with Earthworks

Through the mid-1970s, CHS was not the only alternative high school in Ann Arbor. Earthworks High School, a smaller school with an even more experimental culture, had been founded as "Pioneer II" in 1971. The school was initially an offshoot of Pioneer High School, one of the city's two large traditional schools, and it eventually was merged with CHS. Largely student-driven, the 1971 Earthworks proposal declared that students must be equipped "to function creatively, contributively, responsibly and happily in a world whose cent ...

83: Encyclopedia II - Dad's Army - Situation

Although later episodes were self-contained, the first series had a loose narrative thread, with Captain Mainwaring's platoon being formed and equipped - initially with wooden guns and LDV armbands, and later on full army uniforms. The first episode, The Man and the Hour, began with a scene set in the "present day" of 1968, in which Mainwaring addressed his old platoon as part of the contemporary "I'm Backing Britain" campaign. [1] After relating how he had backed Britain in 1940, the episode proper began; Dad's Army is thus told in flashback, although the final epis ...

83: Encyclopedia II - Bolivia - Economy

Main article: Economy of Bolivia Bolivia remains the poorest country in South America, in part, due to high corruption levels. Bolivia's 2002 gross domestic product (GDP) totaled USD $7.9 billion. Economic growth is about 2.5% a year and inflation is expected to be between 3% and 4% in 2002 (it was under 1% in 2001). Bolivia’s current lackluster economic situation can be linked to several factors from the past two decades. The first major blow to the Bolivian economy came with a dramatic fall in silver prices du ...

83: Encyclopedia II - Claim patent - History

Patents have not always contained claims. In many European countries, patents did not contain claims before the 1970s. It was then often difficult (and subjective) to decide whether a product infringed a patent, since the sole basis to know the extent of protection was the description, in view of the prior art. However, even among patent legal systems in which the claims are used as the reference to decide the scope of protection conferred by a patent, the way the claims are used may vary substantially. Traditionally, two types of cla ...

The Sibyl was said to inhabit a cave with one hundred mouths, each of which had a voice [1] accessible by a still existing dromos. The cave is a trapezoidal dromos or passage over 131 m long, running parallel to the side of the hill and cut out of the volcanic stone. The Cave of the Sibyl was rediscovered in May 1932 by Amedeo Maiuri. 83: Encyclopedia II - Bolivia - Politics

Main article: Politics of Bolivia The 1967 constitution, amended in 1994, provides for balanced executive, legislative, and judicial powers. The traditionally strong executive, however, tends to overshadow the Congress, whose role is generally limited to debating and approving legislation initiated by the executive. The judiciary, consisting of the Supreme Court and departmental and lower courts, has long been riddled with corruption and inefficiency. Through revisions to the constitution in 1994, and subsequent laws, the government has initiated potentially far-reaching reforms i ...

83: Encyclopedia II - Domitian - Early life

Domitian was born in Rome while his father was still a politician and military commander. He received the education of a young man of the privileged senatorial class. He studied rhetoric and literature, publishing some of his writings, law and administration. In his biography Suetonius describes him as a learned and educated adolescent, with elegant conversation. Unlike his brother, Titus, who was much older, Domitian did not join his father's campai ...

83: Encyclopedia II - Domitian - Domitian and Early Christianity

For scholars, it is difficult to uncover Domitian's exact policy towards the developing Christian community. Many people believe that he was the Emperor during the time that the Revelation to John was authored (95 or 96). From a Christian perspective, the Revelation, the final canonical book of the New Testament, reveals God's plan for the Apocalypse. From a secular viewpoint, the Revelation could be viewed as a reaction to the anti-Christian policies of Domitian and some earlier emperors. At the time, Christianity was a struggling religion ...
