707: Encyclopedia II - Boeing 717 - End of production

In January 2005, Boeing announced that it planned to end production of the 717 after it had met all its outstanding orders. Boeing officials cited slow sales for the aircraft's demise. Increased competition from regional jets manufactured by Embraer and Bombardier took a heavy toll on sales in the last several years before the announcement was made. The beginning of the end came in December 2003 when Boeing lost a US $2.7 billion contract from Air Canada, who chose the Embraer ERJ and Canadair CRJ over the 717. The last 717 is expected to roll off the assembly line in May, 2006 at Boeing' ...

707: Encyclopedia II - Boeing 727 - History

The 727 design arose as a compromise between United Airlines, American Airlines, and Eastern Airlines over the configuration of the successor to the Boeing 707. United Airlines wanted a four-engined aircraft for its flights to high-altitude airports, especially its hub at Stapleton International Airport. American wanted a twin-engined aircraft for efficiency reasons. Eastern wanted a third engine for its overwater flights to the Caribbean. Eventually, the three airlines agreed on a t ...

707: Encyclopedia II - Boeing 717 - Finding a niche turnaround

The wisdom of the Boeing decision gradually became apparent. Early 717 operators were delighted with the reliability and passenger appeal of the type and ordered more. The small Australian regional airline Impulse is an example. Impulse took a long-term lease on five 717s in early 2000 to begin an aggressive expansion into mainline routes. To the surprise of few, the ambitious move could not be sustained in competition with the majors, and Impulse sold out to Qantas in May 2001. This left Qantas with a more-or-less unwanted handful of "warmed-over DC-9s" to spoil the effici ...

707: Encyclopedia II - Boeing 727 - Design

The 727 proved very successful with airlines worldwide partly because of its capability to take off and land on smaller runways while still flying medium range routes. This effectively allowed airlines to attract passengers from cities with large populations but smaller airports to worldwide tourist destinations. One of the features that gave the 727 its ability to land on shorter runways was its unique wing design. Through flap extension and leading edge slat deployment, the 727 could almost double its wing surface area, allowing it to fly with ...

707: Encyclopedia II - Boeing 717 - Early background

The last third of the 20th century had been a difficult one for aircraft manufacturers. Douglas, the one-time undisputed market leader, was faced with declining sales of its DC-8 series and stiff competition from the 737 for its DC-9. Douglas found the task of financing the planned wide-body trijet DC-10 beyond its means, and was forced to merge with military specialist McDonnell in 1967. Post merger, McDonnell Douglas (MDC) continued to struggle: the DC-8 production line closed in 1972; by targeting the same market niche, the DC-10 a ...

Seattle Washington - Transportation. Main article: Transportation in Seattle As in almost every other city in western North America, transportation in Seattle is dominated by automobiles, although Seattle is just old enough that the city's layout reflects the age when railways and streetcars dominated. These older modes of transportation made for a relatively well-defined downtown and strong neighborhoods at the end of several former streetcar lines, most of them now bus lines. There is ...

707: Encyclopedia II - Boeing 737 - History

The 737 was born out of Boeing's need to field a competitor in the short-range, small capacity jetliner market which had been opened up by the BAC 1-11 and the Douglas DC-9. Boeing was badly behind however when the 737 program was initiated in 1964, as both of these rivals were already into their flight certification programmes. To speed up the development time, Boeing reused as much technology from the existing 707 and 727 as possible, most notably the fuselage. This gave the 737 a critical advantage over the opposition - six abreast seating compared to the 1-11 and DC-9's five abreast layout, and also made ...

707: Encyclopedia II - Mallorca - Language

The local language is Catalan, with a great deal of dialectal variety when compared to the Catalan of other areas (Catalonia, Valencia) or even the other Balearic Islands. There is also a relatively large amount of variation between Mallorcan localities. In view of the diversity, the local language is often termed "Mallorcan" (mallorquí) or Balearic (balear) rather than the general term Catalan (català). Despite several differences between Mallorcan and Central Catalan (spoken around Barcelona), islanders generally agree that they are varieties of the same language, whereas Valencians are more likely to ...
