 | | | 55: Encyclopedia II - 55 Cancri - The planetsTraditionally, extrasolar planets are named using their primary star's name plus a lowercase letter in order of the planet's discovery from the star, starting with "b" rather than "a" (b, c, d, e, f, ...). So, for example, the third planet discovered around 55 Cancri is called "55 Cancri d". Capital letters (A, B, C, D) are used for stellar companions; this leads to a situation here where 55 Cancri's distant red dwarf companion is called 55 Cancri B, but the star's first discovered planet is called 55 Cancri b. Sometimes, to prevent confusion, the planet is called 55 Cancri Ab, refering to its primary as ...

 | | | 55: Encyclopedia II - T-55 - Production historyThe first T-54 was built in 1945, replaced the T-44 in production from 1947 as a result of a WWII project. At the time it was better armed and armoured than its Western counterparts, the British Centurion and the American M26 Pershing.
The T-54 was redesigned in 1958 as the T-55, with a thicker turret casting, more powerful engine, and NBC protection. Production continued until 1981 in the Soviet Union. It was also produced in Czechoslovakia, Poland and in China as the Type 59, later redesigned as the Type 69; the Type 69 is still man ...

 | | | 55: Encyclopedia II - British Rail Class 55 - ReplacementIn the late 1970s the Deltics began to be supplanted by the next generation of express trains for the East Coast route, the Class 254 High Speed Train (HST), branded as InterCity 125, and the Deltics began to take on secondary roles. However, it was soon realised that the class had a limited future; it was not considered economic to maintain such a small and totally non-standard class of locomotive for secondary services, and the end of the decade saw the first withdrawals from service. More were withdrawn, and 1981 proved to be the last ser ...

 | | | 55: Encyclopedia II - British Rail Class 55 - ProductionFollowing trials with a prototype locomotive, DP1 Deltic, an order was placed with English Electric for a production fleet of twenty-two units. They were intended to replace more than twice that number of Gresley Pacifics. A first was that the locomotives were purchased under a service contract, EE agreeing to maintain them, especially their engines and generators, for a fixed price. More Deltic engines were produced than needed for the locomotives, for the plan and practice was to swap out engines regularly for overhau ...

 | | | 55: Encyclopedia II - British Rail Class 55 - Return to serviceWith the changes taking place on Britain's railways in the 1990s, the outlook changed for preserved diesel locomotives. In British Rail days, no privately owned diesel locomotives were allowed to operate over BR tracks. With privatisation, however, came open-access railways—the track and physical plant were owned and operated by Railtrack, who for a fee would allow anyone's approved locomotives and trains to operate. Suddenly, from being pariahs, the owners of preserved locomotives were on an equal ...

 | | | 55: Encyclopedia II - 1954-55 NHL season - Regular SeasonWith three games left in the season, Maurice "Rocket" Richard, the famous 50-in-50 goal scorer, got into a stick-swinging fight with Hal Laycoe of Boston Bruins and he then punched linesman Cliff Thompson. NHL President Clarence Campbell suspended the Rocket for the remaining three games of the season and the playoffs. At the time, the Canadiens held a two point lead over the Red Wings for first overall in the NHL and Richard held a two point lead over teammate Bernie Geoffrion for the NHL scoring lead. Geoffrion ended up passing Richard in ...
