456: Encyclopedia II - History of Sardinia - The Middle Ages

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Sardinia was subject to several conquests. In 456, the Vandals occupied the island coming from North Africa, after which the Byzantines liberated the island and made it part of the Byzantine Empire. From 711, the Saracens harassed the population of the coastal cities. For that reason in the ninth century Tharros was abandoned in favor of Oristano, after more than 1800 years of occupation. The aid of the maritime republics of Pisa and Genua was called in the struggle against the Arabs. From 1063 on t ...

456: Encyclopedia II - Abbot - General Information

Before the late modern era, the abbot was treated with the utmost reverence by the brethren of his house. When he appeared either in church or chapter all present rose and bowed. His letters were received kneeling, as were those of the pope and the king. No monk might sit in his presence, or leave it without his permission, reflecting the hierarchical etiquette of families and society. The highest place was assigned to him, both in church and at table. In the East he was commanded to eat with the other monks. In the West the Rule of St Bened ...

456: Encyclopedia II - Abbot - Abbatial hierarchy

In several orders, there exists a pyramidal relationship between a major abbey (often the old mother of several others, especially if it was the place from where a monastic reform was launched, which in other cases even lead to breaking away as a new order of congregation) and other ones (often younger daughters), even when these are not (or no longer) priories but have their own abbot. As a daughter could often become a mother in a next phase, the 'family tree' can become very complex, but often the grandmother remains the only one with ack ...

456: Encyclopedia II - Sardinia - Language

The most spoken languages in Sardinia are Italian and Sardinian, a Romance language with obscure roots in Phoenician, Etruscan, and Near Eastern languages. While it has been significantly supplanted by Italian for official purposes, Sardinian is still widely spoken in rural areas. In the northern regions of Gallura and Sassari, the language spoken is not Sardinian but a variety of Corsican (as in Corsica). In the island of San Pietro, the dialect spoken is Ligurian, from Genoa. In the city of Alghero in the north, a Medieval dialect of Catalan is still spoken (the name of the city in Catalan is L'Alguer) as the island ...

456: Encyclopedia II - Capua - Remains

No pre-Roman remains have been found within the town of Capua itself, but important cemeteries have been discovered on all sides of it, the earliest of which go back to the 7th or 6th century BC. The tombs are of various forms, partly chambers with frescoes on the walls, partly cubical blocks of peperino, hollowed out, with grooved lids. The objects found within them consist mainly of vases of bronze (many of them without feet, and with incised designs of Etruscan style) and of clay, some of Greek, some of local manufacture, and of pa ...

456: Encyclopedia II - Sardinia - Business and commerce

Sardinia's currency (as a part of Italy) is now the Euro, but in some rural areas Sardinians still unofficially refer to su Francu (or loc. "su Pidzu"); 1 francu = 1,000 former Italian lire. "Unu Francu", referring to the now long-gone French franc, is a term used by older natives to mean some small amount, much as in English "It's not worth a farthing". Several gold and silver mines operate on the island. The Sardinian economy is today focused on tourism (peaking with the Costa Smeralda), industry, commerce, services and information technology; an increasing inco ...

456: Encyclopedia II - Roman Emperor Late Empire - Theodosian Dynasty

Roman Emperor Late Empire - Theodosius. Much as the Valentinian dynasty was loosely connected to the Constantinian dynasty by marriage, the Theodosian dynasty was loosely connected to the Valentinian; the first Theodosian Emperor, Theodosius I (historically known as "the Great") was son-in-law of Valentinian I. Although he was a Spaniard of military background, like Valentinian, he was no "Barracks Emperor"; he was lawfully and voluntarily elevated to the purple in the East by the reigning Emperor Gratian, his ha ...

456: Encyclopedia II - Abbot - Protestantism

In the German Evangelical Church the title of abbot (Abt) is sometimes bestowed, like abbé, as an honorary distinction, and sometimes survives to designate the heads of monasteries converted at the Reformation into collegiate foundations. Of these the most noteworthy is the abbey of Lokkum in Hanover, founded as a Cistercian house in 1163 by Count Wilbrand of Hallermund, and reformed in 1593. The abbot of Lokkum, who still carries a pastoral staff, takes precedence of all the clergy of Hanover, and is ex officio a member of the consistory of the kingdom. The governing body of the abbey consists of abbot, prior and the "co ...

456: Encyclopedia II - Suebi - Suebic kingdom of Gallaecia

The Suebic kingdom in Gallaecia lasted from 410 to 584 and seems to have enjoyed relatively stable government for most of that time. Historians like José António Lopes Silva, the translator of Idatius' chronicles, the primary written source for the period, find that the essential temper of Galician culture was established in the blending of Ibero-Roman culture with that of the Suebi [1]. The number of the original Suebic invaders is estimated as fewer than 30,000 people, settled mainly in the zones of Braga (Bracara Augusta), Porto, ...

456: Encyclopedia II - V12 - Heavy trucks

Tatra uses a 17.6 L air-cooled turbo diesel V12 engine in many of their trucks, for instance the Tatra T813 and Tatra T815. Some trucks have been fitted with twin V12s. GMC produced a large gasoline-burning V12 in the 1960s for trucks, the "Twin-Six"; it was basically GMC's large-capacity truck V6, doubled, with four cam covers and four exhaust manifolds. Its engine displacement was 702 in³ (11.5 L), and while power was not too impressive at 250 SAE net horsepower (190 kW), torque was 585 lbf·ft (793 N·m). It was possibly the last gasoline engine used i ...

456: Encyclopedia II - Patrician - Patrician position

Under the Roman Empire, patrician status as it had been understood in the Republic ceased to have meaning in everyday life. The emperor Constantine reintroduced the term; Patrician (Patricius) became an honorific title for those who demonstrated faithful service to the Empire. There were generally only a few patricians in the Empire at any given time, and sometimes only one. By the fifth century in the West, the title generally denoted a man who held the power behind the imperial throne, usually a general of the Roman army. Pat ...
