391 BC: Encyclopedia II - Odrysian kingdom - History

The Odrysian state was the first Thracian kingdom that acquired power in the region, by the unification of many Thracian tribes under a single ruler, King Teres. Initially, the state included eastern Thrace and regions as far north as the mouths of the Danube. Teres' son, Sitalkes proved to be a good military leader, forcing the tribes that defected the alliance to acknowledge his sovereignty. The rich state that spread from the Danube to the Aegean built roads to develop trade and built a powerful army that could reach 150,000 men. In 429 BC, they organized a campaign against the Macedonians ...

391 BC: Encyclopedia II - Hundred Schools of Thought - Confucianism and its derivatives

Confucianism is the body of thought that has arguably had the most enduring effect on Chinese life. Also known as the School of the Scholars, its written legacy lies in the Confucian Classics, which later became the foundation of the traditional society. Confucius (551–479 BCE), also called Kong Zi or Master Kong, looked to the early days of the Zhou dynasty for an ideal socio-political order. He believed that the only effective system of government necessitated prescribed relationships for each individual: "Let the ruler be a ruler and th ...

391 BC: Encyclopedia II - Clusium - Ancient history

Clusium - One of the twelve. The origin of Clusium, like that of the Etruscans in general, remains occluded. The deficit of C-14 dates for Etruscan sites and artifacts is notable. Moreover, Etruscan sites have been dismantled, plundered and disturbed since Roman times. For example, the ancient sources describe the tomb of Lars Porsena at Clusium as well as the sacking and levelling of the city by Sulla. Neither of those events is evident at the traditional site of Clusium. However, that site has been level ...

391 BC: Encyclopedia II - Hundred Schools of Thought - Mohism

The school of Mohism was founded upon the doctrine of Mozi (also referred to as Mo Di; 470–c.391 BCE). Though the school did not survive through the Qin Dynasty, Mohism was seen as a major rival of Confucianism in the period of the Hundred Schools of Thought. Its philosophy rested on the idea of universal love: Mozi believed that "all men are equal before heaven", and that mankind should seek to imitate heaven by engaging in the practice of collective love. His epistemology can be regarded as primitive materialist empiricism; he believed t ...

391 BC: Encyclopedia II - Hundred Schools of Thought - Legalism

Xun Zi's unsentimental and authoritarian inclinations were developed into the doctrine embodied in the School of Law or Legalism. The doctrine was formulated by Han Feizi (d. 233 BCE) and Li Si (d. 208 BCE), who maintained that human nature was incorrigibly selfish; accordingly, the only way to preserve the social order was to impose discipline from above, and to see to a strict enforcement of laws. The Legalists exalted the state above all, seeking its prosperity and ...

391 BC: Encyclopedia II - Clusium - Origin in prehistory

The origin of Clusium is lost in prehistory. By the time it appears in the History of Livy, it is already a major Etruscan city being petitioned for assistance against the republican partisans of Rome. About its life prior to that time Livy only makes a brief statement (10.25) that it was once called Camars. Etruscan cities seemed suddenly to spring into existence without prior tradition at about 600 BC, when the orientalizing period began. A rich art and architecture then manifested itself, not unlike the orientalizing period ...
