3: Encyclopedia - 3 Maccabees

The Biblical book 3 Maccabees is found in most Orthodox Bibles as a part of the deuterocanonical books. Protestants and Catholics regard it as apocryphal. The book actually has nothing to do with the Maccabees or their revolt against the Greek empire, as described in 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees. Instead it tells the story of persecution of the Jews under Ptolemy IV Philopator (222-205 BC). The name of the book apparently comes from the similarities between this book and the stories of the martyrdom of ...

3: Encyclopedia - 3-D film

The term 3-D (or 3D) is used to describe any visual presentation system that attempts to maintain or recreate the third dimension, the illusion of depth as seen by the viewer. The basic principle involves taking two pictures, either still or moving, with cameras positioned side by side, and with identical technical characteristics. When viewed in such a way that each eye sees only the image taken on the same side as itself, the viewer's visual cortex will interpret the pair of images as a single three-dimen ...

3: Encyclopedia II - Helium-3 - Fusion

Helium-3 undergoes the following aneutronic fusion reaction, among others, although this is the one most promising to fusion engineers: D + 3He → 4He (3.7 MeV) + p (14.7 MeV) The appeal of helium-3 fusion stems from the nature of its reaction products. Helium-3 is non-radioactive and the lone high-energy proton produced is easily contained using electric and magnetic fields. In contrast, most other proposed fusion processes for power generation lead to the production of ener ...

3: Encyclopedia II - Scream 3 - The rules

A signature device, started in Scream and continued in Scream 2 and Scream 3, was the typical "rules" for that type of horror movie being stated by the characters. In Scream 3, Sidney watches a video made by Randy (Jamie Kennedy, in a cameo role) before his death in Scream 2; he states that if the third movie is just another sequel, then the standard rules for a sequel (given in Scream 2) apply. However, the rules for the final concluding chapter of a trilogy are different: "You've got a ...

3: Encyclopedia II - Helium-3 - Cryogenics

Helium-3 is used in cryogenics to achieve temperatures as low as a few thousandths of a Kelvin; it was discovered by the Australian nuclear physicist Mark Oliphant while based at Cambridge University's Cavendish Laboratory. An important property of helium-3, which distinguishes it from the more common helium-4, is that its nucleus is a fermion since it contains an odd number of particles. At low temperatures (around 4.2K), helium-4 undergoes a phase transition into a superfluid phase that can be roughly understood as a type of Bose Ei ...

3: Encyclopedia II - Alternative 3 - Influence

Bakun notes that Alternative 3 and the intermittent availability of Watkins' book "lent itself to conspiracist interpretations," and though Alternative 3 did not mention UFOs or extraterrestrials, many of the plans mentioned in Alternative 3 have been featured in later assorted conspiracy theories. Bakun argues that Alternative 3 was important in that its "role in the growth of conspiracy theory lay in a later permutation" related to UFOs and the UFO conspiracy theory. 3: Encyclopedia II - 3 Juno - Characteristics

Juno is close to being the seventh largest asteroid (it cannot currently be ranked relative to 52 Europa, with a mass approximately 1.2% the mass of the entire asteroid belt. It is the main body in the Juno family. Amongst the stony S-type asteroids, it is unusually reflective, which may be indicative of different surface properties. Juno rotates in a prograde direction, with the north pole pointing towards ecliptic coordinates (β, λ) = (27°, 103°) with a 10° uncertainty [9 ...

3: Encyclopedia II - Saturn 3 - Trivia

John Barry conceived of the project as a much more lavish vision of the future. The films producers I.T.C. intended the production to be a cash in on the sudden vogue of Science Fiction and Horror following the success of Alien. Farrah Fawcett was also hoped to be a major draw for a teenage male audience and much of the films promotion was based around the revealing space suits she was due to wear in the film. Donen played down the exploitation elements resulting in a film that ...

Having experienced the trauma of the first two pictures, Campbell's Sidney Prescott character now lives in a secluded area of California where she works as a rape crisis counselor from her home. Gale Weathers (Cox) has become a largely successful news reporter (of a sensationalist style), thanks to the books she wrote revolving around the murders of the first two films (and subs ...

Image:3 juno.jpg Some notable observation milestones for Juno include: Juno was the first asteroid for which an occultation was observed. It passed in front of a dim star (SAO 112328) on February 19, 1958. Since then, several occultations by Juno have been observed, the most fruitful being on December 11, 1979 which was registered by 18 observers [6]. Radar signals from spacecraft in orbit around Mars and/or on its surface have been used to estimate the mass of Juno from the tiny perturbations induced by it ...

In 1978, Leslie Watkins wrote a book, Alternative 3, based on the screenplay for the television episode. Watkins had previously written a few moderately successful "suspense thriller" novels, and his Alternative 3 novelization detailed many of the claims presented in the episode. It was published by Sphere Books Ltd, of Grays's Inn Road, London. Jim Keith's Casebook on Alternative 3: Ufo's, Secret Societies and World Control argues that some elements o ...
