The house was acquired by the Government of Canada in 1943 and, like most official residences, is managed by the National Capital Commission. 24 Sussex Drive: Encyclopedia II - Louis St. Laurent - Prime Minister of Canada

In 1948, King retired, and quietly persuaded his senior ministers to support St. Laurent's selection as the new Liberal leader at the Liberal leadership convention of August 1948. St. Laurent won, and became leader of the Liberal party and Prime Minister of Canada. In the 1949 federal election that followed his ascension to the Liberal leadership many wondered, including Liberal party insiders, if this shy, reserved, dignified, grandfatherly man would appeal to the post-war populace of Canada. On the campaign trail, St. Laurent's imag ...

24 Sussex Drive: Encyclopedia II - Head of government - Types and titles of Head of Government

The most common style for a head of government is "Prime Minister." Various constitutions use different titles, or a single titles covers different constitutional pr ...

24 Sussex Drive: Encyclopedia II - Prime Minister of Canada - Too much power?

Unlike the Presidential system of government used in countries such as the United States, an elected member of the Canadian House of Commons follows strict party discipline and has difficulty voting against the party line. If any elected member of the prime minister's governing party votes against any new legislation, the party caucus has the exclusive authority to expel that person from the party. A Member of Parliament (MP) who has been expelled from the party will then sit as an independent MP with extremely limited resources to conduct t ...

24 Sussex Drive: Encyclopedia II - Louis St. Laurent - Appointment to the Mackenzie King Cabinet

Needing strong ministers from Quebec, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King recruited St. Laurent to his wartime Cabinet as Minister of Justice following the death of his Quebec lieutenant, Ernest Lapointe. St Laurent agreed to go to Ottawa on the understanding that his foray into politics was temporary and that he would return to Quebec at the conclusion of the war.
