USS Grayback (SS-208), a Tambor-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the lake herring. 208: Encyclopedia II - USS Grayback SS-208 - First patrol

Grayback’s first war patrol from 15 February to 10 April took her along the coast of Saipan and Guam. There she participated in a deadly four-day game of hide-and-seek with an enemy submarine; the enemy I-boat fired two torpedoes at Grayback on the morning of 22 February, then continued to trail her across the Pacific. Grayback spotted the enemy conning tower a couple of times, and the Japanese ship broached once; but the Grayback could not get into position to attack. After four nerve-wracking days, Grayback shook the other sub and continued on patrol. First blood for her came on 17 Mar ...

208: Encyclopedia II - USS Grayback SS-208 - Fifth patrol

The fifth war patrol began as Grayback sailed from Australia on 7 December 1942. Only a week out of port, Pharmacist's Mate Harry B. Roby was called upon to perform an emergency appendectomy, the second to be done on a patrolling submarine. With Grayback running silent and steady a hundred feet beneath the surface, the untutored Roby successfully removed the infected appendix, and his patient was back standing watch by the end of the patrol. Then 20 December, Grayback enjoyed "a Jap appetizer for Christmas dinner," as sh ...

208: Encyclopedia II - Ferrari 308 GTB - 208 GTB

From 1980 through 1985, a low-displacement 208 GTB and 208 GTS was produced. The engine was de-bored to 68.8 mm (giving an undersquare design) for a total of 1991 cc displacement. This same trick had previously been performed on the 208 GT4 2+2, resulting in the smallest V8 engine ever produced. The 208 was produced for the Italian market only, for tax reasons. The car produced only 155bhp which meant that performance was underwhelming, especially for a Ferrari. 160 208GTS and 140 208GTB cars were produced in 1 ...

208: Encyclopedia II - Ferrari 308 GTB - 308 GTB

The Pininfarina-styled 308 GTB was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1975 as a supplement to the odd Bertone-shaped Dino 308 GT4 and a replacement for the 246 Dino. Unlike the plain 2+2 GT4, the GTB was a 2-seater with aggressive lines, and has been called one of the most beautiful of all Ferraris. The targa topped 308GTS was made famous on the Magnum P.I. television show. The 308GT4 shared much with the original 206 Dino, and the 308GTB is mechanically identical to the GT4. Both sit on the same tube-frame pla ...

Mithras was the central savior god of Mithraism, a syncretic Hellenistic mystery religion of male initiates that developed in the Eastern Mediterranean in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC and was practiced in the Roman Empire from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. Parthian coins and documents bear a double date with a 64 year interval that represents Mithra's ascension to heaven, traditionally given as the equivalent of 208 BC, 64 years after his birth.
