207: Encyclopedia II - End of Han Dynasty - Entrenchment of Sun and Liu

Immediately, after Cao withdrew, Sun took over the northern half of Jing Province. Liu Bei marched south and took over the southern half. The Sun-Liu alliance was further cemented by a marriage of Sun's sister to Liu. Zhou was suspicious of Liu's intentions, however, and suggested to Sun that Liu be seized and put under house arrest (albeit be very well-treated) and his forces be merged into Sun's; Sun, believing that Liu's forces would rebel if he did that, declined. Sun did agree to Zhou's plans to consider attacking Liu Zhang and Zhang Lu ...

For the next several years, Cao conducted no major campaigns while awaiting an opportunity to act against the three major remaining warlords -- Sun Quan, who had succeeded his brother Sun Ce in 200 after Sun Ce died in battle; Liu Biao; and Liu Zhang. 207: Encyclopedia II - Tertullian - Writings

Tertullian - General Character. Thirty-one works are extant, together with fragments of more. Some 15 works in Latin or Greek are lost, some as recently as the 9th century (De Paradiso, De superstitione saeculi, De carne et anima were all extant in the now damaged Codex Agobardinus in 814 AD). Tertullian's writings cover the whole theological field of the time-- apologetics against paganism and Judaism, polemics, polity, discipline, and morals, or the whole reorganization of human life on a Christian basis; they give a picture of the religious life and thought of the time which is of the gre ...

    207: Encyclopedia II - Tertullian - Life

Of his life very little is known, and that little is based upon passing references in his own writings, and upon Eusebius of Caesarea, Hist. eccl. II, ii. 4, and Jerome, De viris illustribus (On famous men) chapter 53. His father held a position (centurio proconsularis, "aide-de-camp") in the Roman army in Africa. Roman Africa was notoriously the home of orators, and this influence can be seen in his style, with its archaisms or provincialisms, its glowing imagery, and its passionate temper. He was a scholar, havi ...

207: Encyclopedia II - Tertullian - Moral Principles:

Tertullian was a determined advocate of strict discipline and an austere code of practise, and like many of the African fathers, one of the leading representatives of the rigorist element in the early Church. These views may have led him to adopt Montanism with its ascetic rigor and its belief in chiliasm and the continuance of the prophetic gifts. In his writings on public amusements, the veiling of virgins, the conduct of women, a ...

End of Han Dynasty - The short domination of the political scene by Empress Dowager He and He Jin. After Emperor Ling's death in 189, his 13-year-old son Liu Bian (劉辯), by his wife Empress He, became emperor. Empress He, now empress dowager, became the regent, and her brother He Jin became the most powerful official at court. He Jin and Yuan Shao quickly started a plan to exterminate all of the powerful eunuchs -- a plan that was not approved by Empress Dowager He. In a fateful move, He Jin summoned the disob ...

End of Han Dynasty - Dong Zhuo's death. After Dong Zhuo withdrew to Chang'an, he maintained an even tighter grip on the imperial government. He also cruelly dealt with all dissent. He had made an official friendly to him, Wang Yun, prime minister, and Wang soon decided that Dong had to be eliminated. He entered into a conspiracy with several other officials -- Huang Wan (黃琬), Shisun Rui (士孫瑞), and Yang Zan (楊瓚) -- to plot against Dong. They eventually persuaded Dong's fierce warrior and adopted son ...

The 900 series classes were reserved for multiple units in departmental stock, most of which were converted from old passenger units. 207: Encyclopedia II - Zhuge Liang - The Northern Expeditions

Zhuge Liang persuaded Jiang Wei, a general of Kingdom of Wei, to defect to the Kingdom of Shu during his first Northern Expedition. Jiang would become one of the prominent Shu generals, and inheritor of Zhuge Liang's battle strategies. Jiang Wei continued to carry on Zhuge Liang's ideals and fight for the Kingdom of Shu after Zhuge Liang's death in 234. In Zhuge Liang's latter years, he launched expeditions against the Wei five times, but all except one failed, usually because his food supplies ran out, rather than failure on the batt ...

Zhuge Liang was born in Yangdu County in Langya Commandery, at present-day Yishui County, Shandong Province. He was the second of three brothers and orphaned early; his mother died when he was nine, and his father when he was twelve. His uncle raised him and his siblings. When Cao Cao invaded Shandong in 195, his family was forced to flee south, and his uncle soon died of illness. Although both his sisters married into important families with numerous connections in the area, for ten years he resided in Longzhong Commandry (in present ...

His name is synonymous with wisdom in Chinese. He was believed to be the inventor of the landmine and a mysterious automatic transportation device (initially used for grain described as a "wooden ox and floating horse" (木牛流馬), which is sometimes identified with the wheelbarrow. Although he is often credited with the invention of the repeater crossbow which is named after him, called Zhuge Nu, this type of semi-automatic crossbow actually first appeared during the Warring States Period, some three centuries before Zhuge's time. An early type of hot air balloon used for military signalling is also named after h ...

Zhuge Liang married Huang Yueying (黄月英), daughter of the scholar Huang Chenyan, in 197 (when he was seventeen years old and she twelve). According to legend, Miss Huang was considered a plain and self-effacing girl, but also very intelligent and wise. Zhuge Liang was the only one able to see through her ruse and come to woo her for her wisdom. Remarkably enough, it appears that Zhuge had no other wives or concubines even when he became prime minister of Shu Han, even though powerful men of the time were generally polygamists. Together, Zhuge and his wife had a son, Zhuge Zhan (諸葛瞻), who s ...

207: Encyclopedia II - Second Punic War - The war in Hispania

While all this was happening, the Romans had carried the war into Hispania. Over the years Rome had gradually expanded along the coast until in 211 BC it captured Saguntum. This prevented Hasdrubal from sending his brother any aid and also diverted Carthaginian reinforcements away from Italia. That same year Rome recaptured Capua and Syracuse, the second falling after what was now a two-year siege, made famous by the defense engines made by Archimedes, who was killed in the sack of the city. However, Hasdrubal was able to defeat the Romans i ...
