The major medical societies in America[27], Britain[28], Canada[29], Australia and New Zealand[30] do not recommend routine non-therapeutic infant circumcision. Major medical organizations in the United States and Canada now say that parents should decide what is in their child's best interests, declining to make a recommendation one way or another. 1 Maccabees: Encyclopedia II - Names and titles of Jesus - Titles not used in the Gospels

Names and titles of Jesus - Christ the King. In Roman Catholic theology, one title given to Jesus is "Christ the King", and there is a feast day associated with this title. This title is meant to say that Christ should rule over all aspects of life, including political life. Thus, this title is opposed to secularism. Names and titles of Jesus - King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Handel referred to Jesus as "King of Kings" and "Lord of Lords" in his Messiah oratorio, a reference to 1st Timothy 6: ...

1 Maccabees: Encyclopedia II - Psalms - Composition of the Book of Psalms

The Book of Psalms is divided into 150 Psalms, each of which constitutes a religious song or chant, though one or two are long and may constitute a set of related chants. When the Bible was divided into chapters, each Psalm was assigned its own chapter. Psalms are sometimes referred to as chapters, though their individuality antedates the chapter assignments by at least 1,500 years. The organization and numbering of the Psalms differs slightly between the (Masoretic) Hebrew and the (Septuagint) Greek manuscripts: Psalms 9 ...

1 Maccabees: Encyclopedia II - Psalms - Authorship and ascriptions

Traditionally the Psalms were thought to be the work of David, but many modern scholars see them as the product of several authors or groups of authors, many unknown. Most Psalms are prefixed with introductory words (very different in the Masoretic and Septuagint traditions) ascribing them to a particular author or saying something about the circumstances of their composition; only 73 of these introductions claim David as author. Since the Psalms were written down around the 6th century BCE, nearly half a millennium after David's reign (about 1000 BCE), they doubtless depended on ora ...

1 Maccabees: Encyclopedia II - Hanukkah - Interaction with other traditions

Hanukkah gained increased importance with many Jewish families in the twentieth century, including large numbers of secular Jews who wanted a Jewish alternative to the Christmas celebrations that often overlap with Hanukkah. In recent years, an amalgam of Christmas and Hanukkah has emerged — dubbed "Chrismukkah" — celebrated by some mixed-faith families, particularly in the United States. A decorated tree has come to be called a "Hanukkah bush". ...

1 Maccabees: Encyclopedia II - Bible - The Introduction of chapters and verses

; see Tanakh for the Jewish textual tradition. The Hebrew Masoretic text contains verse endings as an important feature. According to the Talmudic tradition, the verse endings are of ancient origin. The Masoretic textual tradition also contains section endings called parashiyot, which are indicated by a space within a line (a "closed" section") or a new line beginning (an "open" section). The division of the text reflected in the parashiyot ...

1 Maccabees: Encyclopedia II - Bible - The canonization of Scripture

In Judaism it is commonly thought that the canonical status of some books was discussed between 200 BC and AD 100, though it is unclear at what point during this period the Jewish canon was decided. Protestants cite the Old Testament canon defined by the Council of Jamnia in AD 90 as their basis for not including the Deuterocanonical books, where Roman Catholics assert that Jewish council was convened in reaction to the ri ...

1 Maccabees: Encyclopedia II - Ammon - In the Torah Joshua and Judges

Ammon - Descent. According to the pedigree given in Genesis xix. 37-38, the Ammonites were closely related to the Israelites and still more closely to their neighbors in the south, the Moabites. This relationship is supported by the fact that all names of Ammonitish persons show a pure Canaanite character. But the above passage indicates also the contempt and hatred for the Ammonites felt by the Hebrews (Deuteronomy xxiii. 4). The Torah excludes the progeny of Ammonites from the assembly of the Lord (but cf. Deut. ii. 19, 37, in which the consciousness of relationshi ...

1 Maccabees: Encyclopedia II - Circumcision - Consent

The issue of consent is of particular relevance to circumcision because it is often done to infants, who are unable to consent to this, or indeed any other, medical procedure. The decision, therefore, must fall to the child's caregiver(s). Debate also focuses on what limits, if any, should be placed on a caregiver's ability to make a decision for a boy about a painful (and, some argue, mutilating) procedure with disputed immediate medical value that may be unwanted later in life. Some question the apparent inconsistency in allowing ma ...

1 Maccabees: Encyclopedia II - Books of Samuel - Tribes and peoples

Although most traditional interpretations of Jewish history view the Israelites as the ancestors of both the Kingdom of Israel and that of Judah, which arose only after David's rule, and Hebrews as an alternative name for them, the text makes a strong distinction between Hebrews, Judahites, and Israelites: Israelites consistently refers to Saul's forces. It also is used to refer to the supporters of the rebellions against David's reign, in contrast to his supportes. Judahites ...

1 Maccabees: Encyclopedia II - Books of Samuel - Authorship

Traditionally, the authors of the books of Samuel have been held to be Samuel, Gad, and Nathan. Samuel is believed to have penned the first twenty-four chapters of the first book. Gad, the companion of David (1 Sam. 22:5), is believed to have continued the history thus commenced; and Nathan is believed to have completed it, probably arranging the whole in the form in which we now have it (1 Chronicles 29:29). However, this theory is not supported by most modern scholars, who consider that the text is clearly not the work of men contem ...
