1 John: Encyclopedia II - John 1 - Analysis

The first chapter of the Gospel of John can be divided in two parts : The first part (v. 1-18) is an introduction to the Gospel as a whole, explaining that Jesus is God and acts as the mouthpiece (Word) of God, sent to the world in order to be able to intercede for man and forgive him his sins (The Good News of the Gospel). Comparisons can easily be drawn from this part to Genesis 1 where the same phrase In the beginning first occurs along with the emphasis on the difference between the darkness (such as the eart ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - Mark 1 - John the Baptist
Mark begins with quotes from Malachi 3:1 and Isaiah 40:3. He assumes these refer to John the Baptist. All four gospels use this quote from Isaiah. It is in Luke 4:4-6, Matthew 3:3, and John 1:23. He describes John's activities, preaching repentance and forgiveness of sins and baptizing in the desert. He says he wore camel hair, a leather belt, and survived off locusts and wild honey. There has been much specualtion that John was an Essene, perhaps like Jesus Himself, but there is no hard evidence either way. According to Luke Jesus and John were cousins. All portraits of him paint him as certainly an ascetic, bu ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - Mark 1 - Calling of Disciples

John is put into prison, presumably by Herod. Jesus then goes into Galilee, preaching "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" Jesus goes to the Sea of Galilee and finds Simon Peter and his brother Andrew. He speaks the famous phrase "Come, follow me,...and I will make you fishers of men." Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist according to John They follow him and then soon come upon James and John, who also quickly join the group as Jesus's followers. Mark does not relate that Jesus convinced them to follow him in any way. Ma ...

1 John: Encyclopedia - An Historical Account of Two Notable Corruptions of Scripture

An Historical Account of Two Notable Corruptions of Scripture is a dissertation by the English Mathematician and Scholar Isaac Newton. First published in 1754, twenty-seven years after Newton's death, it reviewed all the textual evidence available from ancient sources on two disputed Bible passages, at First John 5:7 and 1 Timothy 3:16. 1 John: Encyclopedia - Bible and reincarnation

Belief in reincarnation is held by many Hindus, Buddhists, and Taoists but such beliefs are held by relatively few Christians, Jews, and Muslims. No mainstream Christian denomination includes reincarnation among their doctrines. The Christian creeds and confession have consistently proclaimed a belief in a single judgement of humanity and in the eschatological hope of the resurrection of the dead. Some small sects, such as the Liberal Cat ...

1 John: Encyclopedia - Apocalyptic literature

Apocalyptic literature was a new genre of prophetical writing that developed in post-Exilic Jewish culture and was popular among millennialist early Christians. "Apocalypse" is from the Greek word for "revelation" which means "an unveiling or unfolding of things not previously known and which could not be known apart from the unveiling" (Goswiller 1987 p. 3). The flaming poetry of the Book of Revelation that is traditionally ascribed to John is well known to many Christians w ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - Mark 1 - Jesus's Baptism and Temptation

Jesus is one of the many who come to be baptized. Mark introduces him without a history or a description, suggesting the intended reader already has heard of him. Mark, like all the Gospels, gives no physical description of Jesus, unlike the previous description of John. John baptizes him and Jesus then sees the spirit of God descending on him, telling him that he is his son whom he loves and is pleased with. God then sends him out into the desert to be tempted by Satan for forty days. Forty is a common numerological device in the Bib ...

1 John: Encyclopedia - John the Baptist

John the Baptist (also called John the Baptizer or Yahya the Baptizer) is regarded as a prophet by at least three religions: Christianity, Islam, and Mandaeanism. According to the Gospel of Luke 1:36 (NRSV)[1], he was a relative of Jesus. That he was a prophet is asserted by the Synoptic Gospels and the Qur'an (see also prophets of Islam). He is also commonly referred to as John the Forerunner/Precursor because he was the forerunner of Christ (Tiphshut). Isaiah 40:3-5 is commonly read as a prophecy of John. Muslim ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - John Peel - Early life

Peel was born in Heswall on the Wirral Peninsula, near Liverpool, the son of an upper middle class cotton merchant, and educated as a boarder at Shrewsbury School. His housemaster, R. H. J. Brooke, whom Peel described as "extraordinarily eccentric" and "amazingly perceptive", wrote on one of his school reports: Perhaps it's possible that John can form some kind of nightmarish career out of his enthusiasm for unlistenable records and his delig ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - John Peel - BBC career

John Peel - BBC Radio 1. When Wonderful Radio London closed down on August 14, 1967, John Peel joined the BBC's new pop music station, Radio 1, which began broadcasting the following month. Unlike Big L, Radio 1 was not a full-time station, but a hybrid of recorded music and live studio orchestras broadcast at the same time as the talk and light music of BBC Radio Two. The pirate stations had been successful partly because they played records continuously, but the BBC was gagged by the Musicians' Union and record ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - John Peel - John Peel Day

On October 13, 2005, the first "John Peel Day" took place in the UK and as far away as Canada and New Zealand. The BBC encouraged as many bands as possible to stage gigs on the 13th, and over 500 gigs from bands ranging from Peel favourites New Order (who were introduced by Feargal Sharkey of The Undertones) and The Fall, to many new and unsigned bands, took place. The day had been announced in August, and Andy Parfitt, the head of BBC Radio 1 said, "John Peel Day is about celebrating John's le ...

In 1960, he went to the United States to work for a cotton producer who dealt with his father. Once this job had finished he took a number of other jobs including that of a travelling insurance salesman, staying in America until 1967. While in Dallas he spoke to John F. Kennedy as he and Lyndon Johnson toured the city during the 1960 election campaign. Following Kennedy's assassination he presented himself as a reporter for the Liverpool Echo in order to attend the arraignment of Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before Oswald's assassination. He later ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - John Peel - Beginning of British career

He returned to England in 1967 to work for the offshore pirate radio station Wonderful Radio London. He was offered the midnight-to-two shift, which developed into a program called The Perfumed Garden (named after an erotic book famous at the time). It was on "Big L" that he first adopted the name John Peel. At the time I was coming to the end of a fairly catastrophic marriage ... my wife was amazingly aggressive and she hit me a lot and so I was pleased to be on the ship for two weeks out of three. ... It wasn't until [the Bea ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - John Peel - Family and home life

In the 1970s John and his wife Sheila moved to a thatched cottage in a small village near Stowmarket in Suffolk, starting a family of four children. In the eight-acre (32,000 m²) garden, referred to on the radio as Peel Acres, he housed his record collection, estimated by then to be in the hundreds of thousands, in a number of barns and stables. In his later years Peel introduced many of his radio shows from a studio at Peel Acres. Peel and Sheila had 4 children: William, Alexandra, Thomas and Florence. His passion for Liverpool FC was reflected in their names, giving all 4 middle names r ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - John Peel - Dandelion Records and Strange Fruit

In 1969 Peel founded Dandelion Records (named after his pet hamster) in order to release the debut album by Bridget St John, which he also produced. The label subsequently released 27 albums by 18 different artists before folding in 1972. Dandelion was however never a great success with only one release by Medicine Head charting. As Peel stated, It was never a success financially. In fact, we lost money, if I remember correctly, on every single release bar one. I did quite like it but it was terribly indulgent. Not as indulgent as it ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - John Peel - Later years

In his later years Peel appeared to mellow somewhat. Between 1995 and 1997 he presented a show about children, called Offspring, on Radio 4. In 1998 Offspring grew into the magazine-style documentary show Home Truths. When he took on the job presenting the programme, which is about everyday life in British families, Peel requested that it be free from celebrities, as he found real life stories more entertaining. Home Truths was described by occasional stand-in presenter John Walters as being "about people who had ...

1 John: Encyclopedia II - John F. Kennedy International Airport - History

The airport was first known as Idlewild Airport, as crews began to build it partly on Idlewild Golf Course. Construction of the airport began in 1942, and at that time, they thought they would need only 1,000 acres (4 km²) to build it: however, as aviation grew, so did Idlewild, and since then, 4,000 acres (16 km²) have been added. July 1, 1948 was the date the airport saw its first commercial flight. It was dedicated as New York International Airport on July 31 of that same year, although the name "Idle ...
