A new front wheel drive Malibu was introduced in 1997 on an extended wheelbase version of the N-body. The Oldsmobile Cutlass was a clone of the Malibu as a stopgap vehicle before the Oldsmobile Alero. It replaced the Chevrolet Corsica (produced since 1987) and the low-end Lumina.
