1997: Encyclopedia II - Ford F-Series - 1997

Ford took the aero styling to its conclusion for 1997 with an extremely round nose on the new F-series. The "Super Duty" F series did not yet exist, so an F-250 was offered which was an F-150 with heavier duty axles and suspension, along with odd 7 lug wheels. With the arrival of the Super Duty, this F-250 "light duty" was offered as the "7700" package for the F-150 (noted on the tailgate emblem). A wide variety of body options were available: regular cab and SuperCab, standard or flareside boxes, and short and long beds. A new Lightning was introduced in 1999, and Harley-Davidson and King Ranch versions were also created. In ...

The 1997 XK8 was available in coupe or convertible forms and with either a supercharged 390 hp (287 kW) or naturally aspirated 290 hp (213 kW) engine. The supercharged variant is known as the XKR. The first-generation XK series shares its platform with the Aston Martin DB7. Both cars are derived from the Jaguar XJS, though the platform has been extensively changed. Both the XK8 and XKR are limited to a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) by a computer governor, giving them a lower top speed than the car they replaced. The XK8 heralded a change in direction for the company, r ...

1997: Encyclopedia II - Infiniti Q45 - 1997

The Q45 was moved off the Nissan President platform to the new lower-end Nissan Cima platform in 1997. This Q45 had a more conventional appearance and a smaller 4.1 L VH41DE engine that produced 266 hp (199 kW) and accleration figures of 0-60 in 7.7 seconds (compared to 6.3 seconds for the 1998 Lexus LS). From this model, both the Q45 and the Cima were merged together. The all-multilink suspension was changed to struts at the front end, and was further tuned for comfort. The steering slowed down even more to an 18.5:1 ratio. N ...

1997: Encyclopedia II - Ford Escort North American - 1997

The 1997 restyle dropped the hatchbacks and added a new sporty coupe for 1998, the Escort ZX2. A much lower-slung and rakish car than either the sedan and wagon, it was aimed squarely at the youth market as a replacement for the Escort GT (although lacking the latter's rear disc brake setup) and was built exclusively at Ford's Hermosillo, Mexico assembly plant. The interior was refreshed for 1999, and the model was retired after 2002. The 1998 Escort ZX2 featured the 2.0 L, 130 hp (97 kW) Zetec dual overhead cam ...

1997: Encyclopedia II - Timeline of computing 1990-forward - 1997

Timeline of computing 1990-forward - January 8. Intel released Pentium MMX (originally 166 and 200 MHz versions), for games and multimedia enhancement. To most people MMX is simply another 3-letter acronym and people wearing coloured suits on Intel ads, and to programmers in meant an even further expanded instruction set that provides, amongst other functions, enhanced 64-bit support - but software needs to be specially written to work with the new functions. A major rival clone, the AMD-K6-MMX containing a ...

1997: Encyclopedia II - Buick Regal - 1997

In 1997, the Century and the Regal simply became versions of the same car, sitting on a revised W platform that was shared with the Oldsmobile Intrigue, the Pontiac Grand Prix, and the Chevrolet Impala. A four-door sedan was the only model offered, and differences were mostly cosmetic. As the upmarket version, the Regal offered larger engines and fancier trim, and once again boasted a newer version of the 231 (3.8 L) V6. While the Century was mainly a reliable, economy-minded car based upon the W-body, the Regal was fitted with many amenitie ...
