1996 in music - Charts: To be able to control your dream

'Lucid dreams have changed my life.' These are the words of former sceptic, Mark Creed. As an industrial chemist, 37-year-old Mark specialised in polymers, and like so many scientists, was schooled in the concept of behaviourism and thought that if anecdotal phenomena could not be physically measured, they probably did not exist.

1996 in music - Charts: Cultural Creatives Making a Difference for the Future

Some say a critical mass of more conscious individuals can shift our evolution away from wanton destruction toward a positive future for living things on the planet. Bay-area researcher Paul Ray has found that we may be living through a rare population mind-set shift -- something that happens only once or twice a millennium. A growing number of people, according to Ray's research, express concern about ecological sustainability (green issues) and a core group express a commitment to personal and spiritual development in addition. He calls these individuals "Cultural Creatives".

1996 in music - Charts: Encyclopedia II - Grunge music - Mainstream popularity

Prior to its popularity, grunge was listened to mostly by those who played the music. Bands would play at clubs with very few people in attendance, most of which were from other performing bands. Others who listened to the music in those early days were often people who were "just trying to get out of the rain" as many attendants would claim. As bands began to issue albums, independent labels became the key catalysts in bringing the music to the local public. Many of the more successful bands of the era were associated with Seattle's Sub Pop ...

1996 in music - Charts: QUAOAR by sign   A generational indicator   (and a look at the Indigos)

The newly-discovered planet, Quaoar, is an astrological key to identifying and understanding generational influences, particularly the Indigo children for whom Quaoar is a key defining astrological planet.

Like the other outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto), astrological interpretation of Quaoar by zodiac sign will be a generational indicator rather than a personal energy in the natal chart. In so doing, Quaoar begins by providing a fascinating rear-view mirror to look at 20th Century generations.

VH-1's popularity and clearance (number of cable systems carrying the channel) was minimal until the fledgling network was acquired by Viacom (along with MTV, Nickelodeon, and Showtime) and placed into the MTV Networks stable. 1996 in music - Charts: Encyclopedia II - Beastie Boys - Influence

The Beastie Boys are equally influential in rock and rap music history. Their blending of hip-hop and punk rock genres could be seen as a precursor to the rapcore and nu metal genres of the late 1990s, such as Limp Bizkit and KoЯn. The band were also leaders in the use of sampling techniques, with Paul's Boutique being notable for its effective use of samples.
