| | | | 1990 albums: Encyclopedia II - Killing Joke - 1990 and onwardA chance reaquaintence of Coleman and Geordie with Raven, and a chance acquaintance with Martin Atkins (who had gained notoriety as the drummer for Public Image Ltd. and then Ministry), resulted in a revival of Killing Joke. The new Killing Joke - Coleman, Geordie, Raven and Atkins - returned to the band's earlier, harsher sound. Killing Joke's eighth album, Extremities, Dirt & Various Repressed Emotions (1990), included the heaviest, noisiest and harshest music to ever appear on any of Killing Joke's records.

Waits appeared on Primus' 1991 album, Sailing the Seas of Cheese as the voice of "Tommy the Cat", which exposed him to a new audience in alternative rock. This was the first of several collaborations between Waits and the group; Les Claypool (Primus' singer, songwriter and bassist) would appear on several subsequent Waits releases.
In 1991 Waits also had a featured role in the film At ...

| | | | 1990 albums: Encyclopedia II - Killing Joke - 1983-1989Killing Joke's fourth album, Fire Dances (1983), contained music that, like that heard on the Birds of a Feather single, was artier and relatively calmer than the music Killing Joke had made previously, which in hindsight began a new direction for the band. They experiment with this variation of their sound on the singles Me or You (1983, b/w Wilful Days) and A New Day (1984, b/w a dance remix or dub mix of the same ...

| | | | 1990 albums: Encyclopedia II - Ramones - Musical Style and InfluenceThe Ramones pioneered a straightforward, stripped-down sound that was a far cry from the virtuosic musicianship and complex instrumentation that 1970s rock music had become known for. Joey Ramone has stated the Ramones were rather taken with the Bay City Rollers' hit song "Saturday Night," and set out to imitate its catchy, sing-a-long quality. Johnny disliked guitar solos, and played only a handful of them in his more than two decades with the group; his simple, direct riffin ...

| | | | 1990 albums: Encyclopedia II - Ramones - Intra-band TensionThe Ramones always had a certain amount of tension, mainly between Joey and Johnny. Johnny never thought Joey was a good singer, and resented the decision to let him take over lead vocals from Dee Dee. The relationship between the two got considerably worse when Johnny "stole" Joey's girlfriend Linda (whom he later married); they didn't speak to each other for years afterwards. The pair also did not see eye to eye politically, Joey being a left-wing liberal and Johnny a Nixon, Reagan, and Bush-voting conservative. Johnny fought with Dee Dee ...

Ramones - 1974-1975 Early Days.
The initial version of the band included Jeffrey Hyman on drums, John Cummings on guitar, and Douglas Colvin on bass and vocals. Colvin was the first to use the stage name Ramone, calling himself Dee Dee Ramone. He was inspired by the fact that Paul McCartney used the pseudonym Paul Ramone (although some accounts say Paul Ramon) when he checked into hotels. The other members followed suit and adopted new stage names; Hyman became Joey Ramone, Cummings became Johnny Ramone, and the g ...

Pearl Jam - 1990.
Pearl Jam was born from the ashes of Mother Love Bone. With the death of Mother Love Bone frontman Andrew Wood and the disintegration of the band in 1990, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament set out to create their next band. They recruited guitarist Mike McCready and recorded a three song demo tape. This tape made it to ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons, who passed it on to his friend Eddie Vedder during one of their hiking trips. Vedder listened to the tape shortly before going surfing. While he was out in the water, the music played in ...

| | | | 1990 albums: Encyclopedia II - Tom Waits - 1980sAfter leaving Asylum Records for Island Records, Waits released Swordfishtrombones in 1983, a record which marked a sharp turn in Waits's output, and which cemented his reputation as a visionary who remained steadfastly outside the mainstream. In many ways, Waits had carved out his own musical genre.
Apart from Captain Beefheart and some of Dr. John's early output, there was little precedent in popular music for Swordfishtrombones or equally idiosyncratic albums, Rain Dogs (1985) an ...
