 | | | 1985 - June: Encyclopedia II - Deep Purple - Personnel and discographyThe various line-ups in the history of Deep Purple are referred to by fans and the band themselves by "Mark" numbers (abbreviated as Mk I, Mk II, etc.) The "gap" in the numbering, Mk VI, refers to the series of concerts performed with Joe Satriani on guitar, when Ritchie Blackmore quit the band halfway through the tour in 1994. This is the only lineup for which no official recordings have yet been released.

 | | | 1985 - June: Encyclopedia II - B-1 Lancer - Operational HistorySometimes criticized as redundant, the B-1B was given new life as the new threats of the 21st century emerged, and now fills an important niche in the Air Force inventory. It is worth noting that the project finished on budget, and has higher survivability and speed when compared to the older B-52, which it was intended to replace. With the arrival of limited numbers of B-2s in the 1990s and the continuing use of B-52s, its value has been questioned. However, the capability of a high-speed strike with a large bomb payload for time-sensitive operations is useful, and no ...

 | | | 1985 - June: Encyclopedia II - Nelson Mandela - Arrest and imprisonmentIn 1961, he became the leader of the ANC's armed wing Umkhonto we Sizwe (translated as Spear of the Nation, also abbreviated MK), which he co-founded. He co-ordinated a sabotage campaign against military and government targets, and made plans for a possible guerrilla war if sabotage failed to end apartheid. A few decades later, MK did indeed wage a guerrilla war against the regime, especially during the 1980s. Mandela also raised funds for MK abroad, and arranged for pa ...

 | | | 1985 - June: Paganism PornographyPaganism & Pornography
At times my political views seem to lead me into
contradictions. Last month saw me writing a furious letter to Penthouse
magazine concerning their misinformed story on Witchcraft. Within two weeks I
was writing to the head of the QuickTrip Corporation protesting the removal of Penthouse from their stores. You'd think I would
have been happy at a blow struck against a magazine that maligned my religion.
Not so. At stake is the free expression of ideas. Misinformation and censorship
are both threats to
that freedom. Of the two, I judge censorship to be the greater threat. As long
as publishing continues unimpeded, retraction of misinformation is possible.
When publishing is censored, even that becomes impossible.

Her son, Sir Mark Thatcher, has been dogged by a series of controversies from 1982 when he went missing in the Sahara Desert to January 2005 when he was fined three million rand and received a four-year suspended jail sentence in South Africa over funding an aircraft intended for use in a planned coup d'etat in Equatorial Guinea.

 | | | 1985 - June: Encyclopedia II - Duran Duran - InfluenceAlthough they began their career as an interesting New Wave art-school band in the tradition of Roxy Music, the band's quick rise to stardom, their polished good looks, and their embrace of the teen press seemed to have doused their chances of favour from music critics. The British music press was particularly venomous. During the 1980s, Duran Duran were considered the quintessential manufactured, throw-away pop group – not too different from other boy bands created by behind-the-scenes managers (Menudo, New Kids On The Block, *NSYNC). Whi ...

 | | | 1985 - June: Encyclopedia II - Iran-Iraq War - War of the CitiesToward the end of the war, the land conflict regressed into stalemate. Both Iraq and Iran lacked sufficient self-propelled artillery to support their respective armored forces in assaults. This was made even more important because neither side had the air force capability to support ground forces.
When the relatively professional Iraqi armed force advance was halted by the sheer size and committment of Iranian infantry and the Iranian infantry moved to advance itself; it faced the terrible prospect that the Iraqis had large numbers of ...
