| | | | 1983 - June: Encyclopedia II - Brian Mulroney - LegacyMulroney's legacy is a complicated one, and even as of 2006 remains one heavily based on emotion. Mulroney makes the case that his once radical policies on the economy and free trade were not reversed by subsequent governments, and regards this as vindication. His Deputy Prime Minister Don Mazankowski said that his greatest accomplishment will be seen as, "Dragging Canada kicking and screaming into the 21st century." Mulroney's legacy in Canada is associated mostly with the 1988 free trade agree ...

Before the foundation of IFK Göteborg, the dominant club in the Gothenburg area was Örgryte IS, which was considered a middle class club, and in later years an upper class club, like most clubs of that time. IFK became popular amongst the working class which created a fierce rivalry as the supporters not only supported different teams, they were also belonging to different social classes. During this time, in the early 20th century, supporters were supposed to act as gentlemen, applaud ...

| | | | | 1983 - June: Encyclopedia II - The Smurfs - Rumors
The Smurfs - Satanic rumors.
During 1983, rumors of the Smurfs' Satanic activities spread across Puerto Rico. Those who believed the theory claimed seeing Smurfs below plants in their houses, next to their beds, dressed as the devil, etc. As Telemundo Puerto Rico had just begun to telecast Smurfs programs that year, a possibility exists that a rival television channel started the rumors.
The rumors spread like wildfire through the religiously conservative Latin America, where people went so far as to claim ...

| | | | | 1983 - June: Encyclopedia II - Korean War - Depiction
Korean War - Artistic depiction.
Artist Pablo Picasso's painting Massacre in Korea (1951) depicted violence against civilians during the Korean War. By some account, civilian killings committed by U.S. forces in Shinchun, Hwanghae Province was the motive of the painting. In South Korea, the painting was deemed anti-American, a longtime taboo in the South, and thus was prohib ...

| | | | 1983 - June: Encyclopedia II - Ariel Sharon - Political careerWhen Sharon joined Begin's government he had relatively little political experience. He avoided Begin's Herut party in the 1940s and 1950s and seemed to be personally devoted to the ideals of Mapai, and then Labor. However, after retiring from military service, Sharon was instrumental in establishing the Likud in July 1973. The Likud was comprised of Herut, the Liberal Party and independent elements. Sharon became chairman of the campaign staff for the elections which were scheduled for November 1973. But two and a half weeks after the start ...

| | | | 1983 - June: Encyclopedia II - Iran-Iraq War - War of the CitiesToward the end of the war, the land conflict regressed into stalemate. Both Iraq and Iran lacked sufficient self-propelled artillery to support their respective armored forces in assaults. This was made even more important because neither side had the air force capability to support ground forces.
When the relatively professional Iraqi armed force advance was halted by the sheer size and committment of Iranian infantry and the Iranian infantry moved to advance itself; it faced the terrible prospect that the Iraqis had large numbers of ...

| | | | 1983 - June: Encyclopedia II - Andy Kaufman - RebirthSince the passing of this date, there have been unsubstantiated reports claiming that Kaufman is back from the dead and has a blog apparently chronicling his comeback. [1] However, these claims are highly questionable and are even self-contradictory in places (on the blog he contradicts the, now suspended, press release which he apparently wrote and paid for himself). Potentially dozens of fake Kaufmans were expected to appear around this time and this appears to be another example of urban legends inspiring real events.
