1979: Encyclopedia II - General Motors Astra - 1979

The Astra name originated with Vauxhall's 1979 model, though the car was designed and built a year earlier in Germany as an Opel Kadett. This model replaced the Vauxhall Viva in the UK, along with some versions of the Vauxhall Chevette. However, the Chevette remained on the price list for several years afterwards until the Vauxhall Nova was launched. The Astra was Vauxhall's first model to have front-wheel drive. The car featured a new unified engine for Vauxhall/Opel, featuring an all-aluminium head, overhead camshaft and hydraulic v ...

1979: Encyclopedia II - Mazda 626 - 1979

The first Mazda 626 in most markets appeared in 1979. It was a rear wheel drive compact, little changed from the Japan-market Mazda Capella it was based on. With a 75 hp 2.0 L SOHC straight-4 F/MA engine, it performed well, with both Consumer Guide and Car and Driver magazines comparing it with a BMW. One innovative feature was a split-folding rear seat, increasing cargo capacity and flexibility tremendously. This first 626 was a hit, doubling Mazda's US sales. Engine: 1979-1982 2.0 L F/MA ...

1979: Encyclopedia II - Oldsmobile Toronado - 1979

The third generation (image) ran from 1979 through 1985. This was a seriously downsized model and carried V8 engines of 350 in³ (5.7 L) and later 307 in³ (5.0 L). More startlingly, a larger version of Buick's V6 was made available—252 in³ (4.1 L), up from 231 in³ (3.8 L), and also a diesel V8, converted from Olds' well-regarded gasoline-powered 350 in³ (5.7 L) V8. The V6 was not popular, though, and the diesel conversion acquired a terrible mechanical reputation, ...

The same model lineup continued, with a revision of both the front grille and taillight lenses. A diesel-powered Oldsmobile 260 (based on the Olds 350 Diesel) was optional; diesel Cutlasses had the "Oldsmobile Diesel" badges on the decklids, where gas-powered Cutlasses had the Olds Rocket logo. 1979: Encyclopedia - 1979 energy crisis

The 1979 (or second) oil crisis occurred in the wake of the Iranian Revolution. In the wake of protests, the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, fled his country in early 1979, allowing Ayatollah Khomeini to gain control. The protests shattered the Iranian oil sector. While the new regime resumed oil exports, it was inconsistent and at a lower volume, forcing up prices. Saudi Arabia and other OPEC nations increased production to offset the decline, and the total loss in production was just about 4%. However, a widesprea ...

The UK general election, 1979 was held on May 3, 1979 and is regarded as a pivotal point in 20th century British politics. The Conservatives and their leader Margaret Thatcher won and replaced the Labour government.
